Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte has moved to suggest that he could switch his allegiance from France to Spain in the future.
The 21-year-old has been regarded as one of La Liga’s best defenders for several years now, but he has been unable to break into the first team plans of France coach Didier Deschamps.
Laporte has so far made nine appearances for France Under-21 team, but he was never contacted by the senior Les Bleus coach.
And with Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque speaking to him on several occasions, the youngster admits he could decide to represent La Furia Roja in the future.
“I am playing with the Under-21 team, but the coach of the senior team has not called me yet,” Laporte told Spanish Radio Onda Vasca.
“I hope to get promoted, but if it is not yet the time, then so be it.
”If after a while, that option is no longer available or they do not want me, I will have to consider other opportunities, one of which is to play for Spain.”
Despite his fragile age, Laporte already has 100 La Liga appearances to his name, and has so far scored 5 goals.
