Tottenham vs Sunderland prediction
Tottenham Hotspur will be keen to bounce back from Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Leicester City when they square off against Sunderland, who picked up a vital three points from the Swansea City game. Both sides will go for a win, meaning that a lively contest is on the cards.
Unlucky loss to Leicester
Tottenham Hotspur produced a fine performance against fellow top 4 side Leicester City in midweek, but the Spurs failed to turn their dominance into goals. The capital club had 21 goal attempts, while taking no less than 16 corners during the match, but the Robert Huth eventually helped the Foxes pick up all three points from the clash. Despite losing the match Mauro Pochettino’s troops remained in fourth position in the standings and they are determined to secure their spot in the Champions League. Tottenham host Sunderland at their White Hart Lane on Saturday and this has to go down as a must-win game for the hosts, who are on a three-match winless run in all competitions. Harry Kane failed to score against Leicester City in midweek, but no doubt the team’s top scorer will pose a big threat for the opposition defenders on Saturday afternoon.
Alex Pritchard and Clinton N’Jie remain in the recovery room, but Ryan Mason should recover in time to face Sunderland. Coach Mauro Pochettino has no other selection worries ahead of the clash.
Important win at Swansea
Sunderland do not want to drop to the Championship and they are fighting hard to secure yet another Premier League survival. The Black Cats have defeated the likes of Aston Villa (3-1) and Swansea City (4-2) in the national championship in the new year and they will be looking to keep their 100% record intact in 2016 when they take on Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Saturday. However, seeing that Sam Allardyce’s team failed to beat Spurs in previous 11 meetings between the two teams in the Premier League, the relegation strugglers should not consider the trip to London appealing. Anyhow a win over Mauro Pochettino’s men would see the visitors escape the relegation zone and I am positive that the Black Cats will leave their hearts on the field in order to extend their winning run in the league to three matches. Jermain Defoe has been scoring goals for fun of late and the experienced attacker is likely to prove a handful for the opposition defenders.
Adam Matthews, Youbes Kaboul and Sebastian Larsson are all sidelined with injury, but coach Sam Allardyce has no other selection worries ahead of the Tottenham Hotspur game. The Big Sam should stick to the 4-2-3-1 formation.
Quick Facts
- Tottenham failed to keep a clean sheet in previous four fixtures
- Spurs are eyeing their sixth home win of the season in EPL
- Sunderland recorded their last win at White Hart Lane back in 2008
- Black Cats suffered three defeats in previous four away games
- Over 3.5 goals were scored in Sunderland’s last four away fixtures
Tottenham vs Sunderland betting tip
Sunderland have been in a thrilling form in 2016 and seeing that the Spurs have been misfiring of late, I am not tempted to put my money on the capital club this time out. The Black Cats are desperate to move away from bottom three and seeing that they scored no less than seven goals in previous two league games, I believe that the visitors are capable of picking up at least one point from the White Hart Lane clash.
Tip: Sunderland +1.5
Odds: 1.88 (7/8) @bet365
