Sunderland vs Liverpool prediction

Liverpool badly needed a win at the weekend and they got one. The confidence is high in Jurgen Klopp’s team ahead of the trip to Sunderland, but the hosts, who are desperate to escape the relegation zone, should not be written off just yet.

Stadium of Dark

Back-to-back wins over Crystal Palace and Stoke City in November had Sunderland out of the relegation zone, but they have not earned a single point in the Premier League ever since. The Black Cats were totally outclassed by Manchester City on Boxing Day, with the team extending their losing run to four games in the league. The relegation strugglers face an uphill task in Wednesday’s festive fixture against Liverpool and I do not believe that they are capable of putting an end to the negative trend. The Big Sam feels pressure ahead of the visit of Jurgen Klopp’s troops, but the experienced tactician claims that keeping Sunderland in the top flight represents one of the biggest challenges of his long career. The hosts are desperate to grab something from Wednesday’s game against Liverpool, but the lack of confidence might prove to be the biggest problem for the out-of-sorts Black Cats.

Younes Kaboul and Sebastian Larsson are both sidelined with injury, while centre-back John O’Shea is a major doubt and he will be assessed on the match day. Jeremain Lens is widely expected to return to the starting line-up.

Important win over Foxes

Liverpool desperately needed to stop the run of four games without a win. The Reds produced a fine performance against Leicester City on Boxing Day and they totally deserved to pick up all three points from the match. Jurgen Klopp’s men regained a much-needed confidence and they now aim to keep on climbing the Premier League standings. Liverpool are five points behind the Champions League berth and, no doubt, Wednesday’s clash against relegation-threatened Sunderland is of big importance for the Anfield outfit. However, a wounded lion is the most dangerous one, meaning that Jurgen Klopp will have to warn his men against complacency. Christian Benteke scored the winner against Leicester City and the opposition defenders are likely to have their work cut out for them when facing the Belgian ace. Liverpool have been producing fine performances on the travels this season and it is well known that they managed to outplay the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City away from home earlier this season.

Martin Skrtel, James Milner, Danny Ings and Joseph Gomez remain in the recovery room, while Wednesday’s clash against Sunderland comes too early for attacker Daniel Sturridge. Christian Benteke should be recalled to the starting XI.

Quick Facts

  • Sunderland failed to score in previous two encounters with Liverpool
  • The Black Cats have yet to keep a clean sheet in December
  • Liverpool failed to score in last three away games
  • The Reds are unbeaten in six meetings with Sunderland
  • Liverpool defeated Black Cats on their previous visit to the Stadium of Light

Sunderland vs Liverpool betting tip

Liverpool are eyeing a place in the Champions League and I am positive that the Reds will go for a win in Wednesday’s game against out-of-form Sunderland. The Black Cats are low on confidence ahead of the visit of Liverpool and I would not be surprised if the visitors pick up all three points from the Stadium of Light. When the two sides met in Sunderland last season Serbian winger Lazar Markovic helped the Reds record a 1-0 win over Black Cats.
