Sevilla vs Espanyol prediction

After playing out a goalless draw with Real Betis in the local derby, Sevilla will be looking to return to winning ways in La Liga when they host Espanyol at their Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on day Estadio Ramon Sanzhez Pizjuan on Wednesday evening.

“Pizjuan” – the fortress

Sevilla are much like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Los Sevillanos have been impressive at their Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan this season, but the team’s away record is awful. Los Rojiblancos have defeated the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid on home soil in the first half of the season and it is no surprise they are regarded as hot favourites to win Wednesday’s festive fixtures against Espanyol. Unai Emery’s troops shared the spoils with their local rivals Real Betis in their last league match and they are now on a quest to melt Celta Vigo’s advantage in the standings to five points. Os Celeste sit in fourth place in the standings and it is well known that Sevilla’s main goal is to book their place in the Champions League. Anyhow, the fact that los Sevillanos have recorded a win in each of their previous six home games in the league is giving the fans a reason for optimism ahead of the visit of Espanyol.

Grzegorz Krychowiak is sidelined through suspension, while Daniel Carrico has overcome his injury and he could play some part in Wednesday’s clash against Espanyol. Nico Pareja, though, remains in the treatment room.

Periquitos struggling in front of goal

Espanyol have not been the highest scoring side in La Liga this season, but, on the other hand, los Periquitos look solid at the back. The Catalan outfit recorded a morale-boosting win over Las Palmas at the weekend and they will be looking to build on the triumph when they square off against Sevilla at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Wednesday. The visitors will aspire to securing a first victory at the “Pizjuan” since 2011, but beating the high-flying hosts is easier said than done. Espanyol have been struggling on the travels of late and with los Sevillanos next, they are unlikely to put an end to their four-match losing run on the road. It has to be noted that los Periquitos have netted no more than one goal in previous four away matches in the national championship. A man to watch in the away team will be Ecuador attacker Felipe Caicedo, who has netted five goals in 15 appearances this season.

Papa Diop is banned, but new coach Constantin Galca has no fresh injury worries ahead of the trip to Seville. Midfielder Salva Sevilla is pushing for a start.

Quick Facts

  • Sevilla are eyeing their seventh consecutive win at home in the league
  • Los Sevillanos have netted 11 goals in previous four home fixtures
  • Unai Emery’s men are unbeaten in last nine league meetings with Espanyol
  • Espanyol failed to score in previous two away fixtures in the league
  • Los Periquitos are on a four-match losing run on the road
  • Catalan side conceded nine goals in previous three meetings with Sevilla in La Liga

Sevilla vs Espanyol betting tip

Sevilla are high on confidence ahead of Wednesday’s game against Espanyol. Los Sevillanos have been producing terrific displays on home soil of late and seeing that los Periquitos have been struggling on the travels in the first half of the season, I am tempted to put my money on the hosts. Sevilla are unlikely to blow their chance to climb to sixth position in the standings this time out.
