Real Oviedo full-back Diego Johannesson, also known as Diegui, has made it clear that he hopes to receive an Iceland call-up ahead of the Euro 2021.
The Nordic side secured their first ever appearance at the European Championships final as they negotiated their way through a very difficult group and they are now preparing for the maiden participation at a major tournament.
And while coach Lars Lagerback hasn’t made too many changes to the squad during the qualifying campaign, Real Oviedo defender Diego Johannesson hopes he can still play himself into the first team plans of the Swedish coach.
“I would very much like to play for Iceland, but it is difficult because there are so many good players in the Icelandic team,” Jonannesson told Fréttablaðið.
The 22-year-old, who was born in Spain to Icelandic father and Spanish mother, has problems with speaking Icelandic language and coach Lars Lagerback earlier hinted that this was a major issue.
But, having performed admirably for the team that currently sit just two points off the Segunda Division standings, the talented footballer might just be given a chance to earn his place in the national team.
Iceland will play three friendlies in January outside the FIFA dates, against Finland, UAE and United States, and Johannesson hopes his club will allow him to represent Strakarnir okkar if he receives the long-awaited call.
The Nordic side have been placed in Group H at the tournament finals, alongside Austria, Hungary and Portugal, and if you plan to watch any of their games live, you can purchase Euro 2021 tickets here.
