Las Palmas vs Atletico Madrid prediction

League leaders Atletico Madrid will be looking to move one step closer to winning La Liga trophy with a victory over Las Palmas at Estadio de Gran Canaria. However, los Amarillos are tough to beat at home ground, meaning that los Rojiblancos will have to be at the top of their game if they are to pick up all three points from Sunday’s match.

Signs of improvement

Las Palmas endured a slow start to the season and just few months ago they were regarded as main contenders for the relegation. However, the newcomers did well to make amends for the poor start to the 2015/2016 La Liga campaign and they are currently three points clear of bottom three in the standings. Los Amarillos are on a five-game unbeaten run in all competitions and they head into Sunday’s league game against Atletico Madrid following a 3-2 win over Eibar in Copa del Rey. It is well known that Las Palmas are tough to beat at home ground and the fact that they recorded three wins in previous five home fixtures is certainly giving the fans a reason for optimism ahead of the visit of Diego Simeone’s unstoppable machine. Anyhow, seeing that los Amarillos will be more than happy with one point from the game, there is every chance they will adopt a defence-minded approach in Sunday’s clash.

The likes of Javi Castellano, Pedro Bigas, Angel Lopez and Hernan remain in the treatment room. Carlos Gutierez has joined Burgos on loan, while Sergio Araujo returns to the starting line-up after he was rested against Eibar.

Three consecutive league wins

Atletico Madrid proved their worth in the 2013/2014 La Liga campaign, with the team finishing the season in top position in the standings, leaving Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona behind them. However, los Rojiblancos failed to defend their trophy last term as they finished the season in third place in the standings. The club chiefs decided to reinforce the squad in the summer transfer window and, as a result, they are on the right track to regain the La Liga title. Diego Simeone’s men are leading the chase for the trophy, but seeing that they are just two points clear of defending champions Barcelona, I am positive that the capital club will go all guns blazing at Las Palmas on Sunday. Diego Simeone used Thursday’s Copa del Rey game against Rayo Vallecano to rest some of his first-team regulars, but he is going to field the best possible side against los Amarillos.

Fernando Torres missed the Copa del Rey game with injury and he is unlikely to recover in time to face Las Palmas. Tiago Mendes has yet to overcome his injury, but Diego Simeone has no other selection worries.

Quick Facts

  • Las Palmas suffered only one loss in previous six home games in La Liga
  • Los Amarillos are keen on scoring their first ever goal against Atletico Madrid
  • Atletico have kept four clean sheets in previous five away games in La Liga
  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in Atletico’s last four league fixtures
  • Diego Simeone’s men are eyeing their eighth away win of the season

Las Palmas vs Atletico Madrid betting tip

Las Palmas face an uphill task in Sunday’s La Liga game and, as I have already mentioned, coach Quique Setien is likely to use “Catenaccio” tactic against Atletico Madrid. Los Rojiblancos have been impressive at the back this season and, taking everything into account, there is every chance we will see a low-scoring game at Estadio de Gran Canaria. When the two sides met in Madrid in the reverse fixture Atletico recorded a 1-0 win over Las Palmas.

Tip: Under 2.5 goals
