Romania clinched second place in their qualifying group, just one point behind Group F winners Northern Ireland and they certainly have big ambitions for the Euro 2021 finals.
The Tricolori coach Anghel Iordanescu decided to call nine Steaua players for the national team camp in Turkey, where they will begin preparations for the summer tournament in France.
The players in question include Florin Nita, Cornel Rapa, Paul Papp, Alin Tosca, Alexandru Chipciu, Nicolae Stanciu, Adrian Popa, Lucian Filip and Mihai Pintilii.
However, reports in Romania suggest that Steaua boss Laurentiu Reghecampf strongly disagrees with the decision. The 40-year-old coach does not want his first-team regulars to leave the club in the midst of the season, meaning that a new scandal could be just around the corner.
Former Romania international Mirel Radoi is seen as a peacemaker and he believes that the two tacticians should come to a compromise.
“I believe that they need to have a discussion on the issue. In my opinion, Euro should be priority, but I also hope that Steaua is not affected. Anyhow, the two sides should reach a consensus”, said Mirel Radoi.
Romania have been drawn alongside Switzerland, Albania and Montenegro in Group A at Euro 2021 finals and they will face Ukraine in March as part of preparations for the tournament finals.
The training camp will be held between 25 January and 6 February, during which Tricolori will play a total of three international friendlies.
The opponents will be revealed in the coming days, so stay turned to our Internationals news section for updates on Romania’s preparations for Euro 2021.
