Russia hopeful Roman Neustadter agrees Zenit deal

Russian daily newspaper Izvestia understands that Zenit St. Petersburg are set to sign Schalke midfielder Roman Neustadter.

Zenit and Schalke have agreed the deal and reports in Russia suggest that the transfer should be made official in the coming days.

Roman Neustadter was born in Dnepropetrovsk and despite the fact that he played two international games for Germany, he is eligible to represent Russia at Euro 2021 finals.

“As it stands, the Russians are trying to sort out my citizenship” said the former Borussia M’gladbach footballer.

“I hope things work out. If I had the chance to play at the European Championship and perhaps in a World Cup two years later, I’d like to grab it with both hands.”, added the 27-year-old midfielder.

Neustadter was in touch with former Russia coach Fabio Capello, but talks broke down when the Italian tactician was sacked by the national team bosses. Anyhow, a move to Zenit would help the player earn his first ever cap for Leonid Slutsky’s side.

Russia have been drawn alongside England, Slovakia and Wales at Euro 2021 finals.
