Rayo Vallecano vs Atletico Madrid prediction

Rayo Vallecano will be looking to get revenge on Atletico Madrid for the La Liga loss when the two local rivals square off against each other at Estadio del Rayo Vallecano in Copa del Rey last 16, first leg. Los Rojiblancos are eager to win the Primera Division trophy, but they have big ambitions for the 2015/2016 Spanish Cup campaign as well.

Rayo struggle at the back

Rayo Vallecano desperately needed to stop the run of five-games without a win at the weekend, but they managed to pick up no more than one point from the Real Sociedad game. Los Vallecanos once again experienced all sorts of problems at that back and it has to be noted that they have conceded 14 goals in previous three league games. Coach Paco Jemez is under big pressure ahead of the visit of Atletico Madrid as his men sit in the relegation zone in la Liga standings. Anyhow, seeing that Rayo suffered a 2-0 loss to Diego Simeone’s troops when the two sides met in the suburbs of Madrid in a league clash in December, no doubt the hosts will fight tooth and nail in order to get their revenge on los Rojiblancos. Rayo Vallecano eliminated Getafe on away-goal rule in Copa del Rey last 32.

The likes of Amaya, Cobeno, Rat, Ebert and Tono all missed the Real Sociedad game with injury and they are unlikely to play against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening.

New winning run

Atletico Madrid suffered a 1-0 loss to Malaga on day 16 of the 2015/2016 Primera Division campaign, but they quickly bounce back from the defeat, with the team beating Rayo Vallecano and Levante in previous two league games. Los Rojiblancos regained a much-needed confidence and, to make things even better for the fans, the team regained top position in the standings. Diego Simeone’s men have been high on confidence since the opening match of the season and they are favourites on paper to make it to the Copa del Rey quarter-finals. Atletico Madrid cannot afford any complacency against Rayo Vallecano, but that should not prove to be a problem for the visitors as Diego Simeone is likely to give a chance to his reserves, who are eager to prove their worth. Fernando Torres is likely to return to the starting line-up and he should pose a big threat for the opposition defenders.

Midfielder Thomas Partey returns to the starting line-up after scoring the winner against Levante. Fellow midfielder Tiago has yet to recover from his respective injury.

Quick Facts

  • Rayo Vallecano are on a six-match winless run
  • Los Vallecanos scored only one goal in previous three meetings with Atletico
  • Paco Jemez’s men conceded 19 goals in previous five fixtures
  • Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in past five meetings with Rayo
  • Los Rojiblancos have kept three clean sheets in previous four games
  • Atletico are after their 11th Copa del Rey trophy

Rayo Vallecano vs Atletico Madrid betting tip

Atletico Madrid are superior to Rayo Vallecano, who have been totally out of form of late, and despite the fact that Diego Simeone is unlikely to field the best possible side in the first leg, I believe that there is a big value in betting on La Liga leaders. Los Rojiblancos outplayed los Vallecanos in the suburbs of Madrid earlier this season and I am not sure if the hosts are capable of upsetting the Estadio Vicente Calderon outfit on Wednesday.

Tip: Atletico Madrid/Atletico Madrid
