Oxford vs Swansea prediction
A place in the FA Cup last 32 will be at stake when Oxford United and Swansea City take on each other at the Kassam Stadium on Sunday. The Swans are not enjoying a season to remember and a win over the League Two side could help them regain a much-needed confidence.
Fine form
Oxford United gave fans some festive cheer on Boxing Day, with the team beating Exeter City 3-0 at their Kassam Stadium and following a goalless draw with Yeovil Town the Yellows recorded a thrilling 4-2 win over Notts County in their first game of the new year. Michael Appleton’s troops sit in third place in the League Two table and the team’s main goal is to secure promotion to the League One. Oxford United take on Bristol Rovers in the league next week and I would not be surprised if coach Michael Appleaton decides to rest some of his first-team regulars in Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Swansea City. The Yellow have eliminated the likes of Braintree Town and Forest Green on their way to the FA Cup last 64, but the Premier League side will certainly pose a much bigger threat for the hosts than their previous rivals.
Danny Hylton is likely to be recalled to the starting line-up after scoring a brace in a friendly against Birmingham City on Tuesday. The likes of James Roberts and Sam Humphreys have overcome their respective injuries, meaning that coach Mike Appleton has a full squad to choose from.
Important game for Alan Curtis
Swansea City were struggling under Garry Monk in the first half of the 2015/2016 Premier League campaign and, as a result, Alan Curtis took over the reins. The Welsh tactician has recorded only one win with the Liberty Stadium outfit so far and it is no surprise they occupy 17th place in the standings after 20 rounds. Sunday’s FA Cup match against Oxford United will be Alan Curtis’ first game in full-time charge, but it has to be noted that he is widely expected to mix the squad against the League Two side. Swansea City are desperate to secure the Premier League survival and Wednesday’s relegation six-pointer against Oxford United could be crucial for the Welsh outfit. Alan Curtis’ men are not regarded as good travelers and it remains to be seen if they are capable of stopping the run of five games without a win on the road.
Franck Tabanou and Eder are both doubtful, while Jefferson Montero and Modou Barrow are both likely to return to the starting line-up. Kristoffer Nordfelt is pushing for a start as well.
Quick Facts
- Oxford United suffered only one loss in previous five home games in FA Cup
- Yellows managed to keep two clean sheets in last three league matches
- Swansea City recorded only one win in previous ten games
- Swans failed to score in three of their last five matches on the road
- Alan Curtis’ team netted 1+ goal in previous five games in FA Cup
Oxford vs Swansea betting tip
Seeing that under 2.5 goals were scored in previous three meetings between the two sides and considering that Alan Curtis is unlikely to field the best possible side against Oxford United, I would not be surprised if we see a low-scoring affair in Sunday’s FA Cup game. In their last meeting in a competitive match Swansea City recorded a hard-fought 1-0 win over Oxford United and, taking everything into account, one goal should separate the two teams in the Kassam Stadium clash.
Tip: Under 2.5 goals
