Marseille vs Guingamp prediction

Having eliminated Caen in Coupe de France in midweek, Olymipque Marseille will be aiming to start a new winning run in Ligue 1 when they host Guingamp at their Stade Velodrome on Sunday. Jocelyn Gourvennec’s troops were firing blanks in league games in December, but they certainly want to escape the danger zone.

Last home win back in September

Olympique Marseille have been struggling in the 2015/2016 Ligue 1 campaign. Argentine tactician Marcelo Bielsa has been sorely missed this season as OM sit in 10th position in the standing ahead of Matchday 20. Michel’s charges shared the spoils with Bordeaux in their last game in 2015, but they managed to eliminate in Coupe de France at the weekend in their first match of the new year. Olympique Marseille aim to put unsuccessful 2015 behind them and a win over Guingamp would certainly help the team move a little closer to the European places. Michel’s team recorded their last win at Stade Velodrome back in September, but I believe that the time has come for the French giants to start a new winning run on home soil. Michy Batshuayi is set to lead the attack for the hosts against Guingamp and the opposition are likely to have their work cut out for them when facing the Belgian striker.

Karim Rekik is sidelined through suspension, whilst the likes of Romain Alessandrini, Benjanim Mendy, Bouna Sarr, Remy Cabella and Paolo de Ceglie all miss the game with injury. Brice Dja Djedje and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou are rated doubtful.

Four consecutive defeats on the road

Guingamp did remarkably well to finish the 2014/2015 Ligue 1 campaign in the top half of the table, but the team have been struggling in the national championship this season. The relegation strugglers sit occupy 18th place in the standings and no doubt the team’s top flight status is in danger. Guingamp did crush Chantilly in the French Cup on Sunday evening, but they are on a five-match losing run in Ligue 1 and they face an uphill task in the Stade Velodrome clash. Jocelyn Gourvennec’s are not regarded as good travelers and I do not believe that they are capable of recording their first away win since October, when they defeated rock-bottom Troyes at Stade de l’Aube. A man to watch in the away team will be midfielder Younousse Sankhare, who has been producing fine performances in the 2015/2016 Ligue 1 campaign.

Mamadou Samassa is sidelined with injury, while Nill de Pauw is a major doubt and he faces a late fitness test. Coach Jocelyn Gourvennec has no other fresh injury worries ahead of the trip to Marseille.

Quick Facts

  • Olympique Marseille are on a seven-game winless run at home ground
  • OM defeated Guingamp in eight of previous nine meetings between the two teams
  • Guingamp scored two goals in previous five away games in Ligue 1
  • Jocelyn Gourvennec’s team recorded only one win in last ten league fixtures
  • Over 2.5 goals were scored in three of Guingamp’s last four games

Marseille vs Guingamp betting tip

Guingamp outplayed Olympique Marseille (2-0) when the two sides met at Stade du Roudourou in the first half of the season. OM are certainly hungry for revenge and given Guingamp’s poor form in the league, I believe that Michel’s men are capable of recording a victory over the relegation-threatened team. This has to go down as a must-win situation for the hosts, who are eyeing a place in European competitions and seeing that Guingamp suit Marseille, I am tempted to put my money on the hosts.

Tip: Marseille to win
