Giannelli Imbula chooses Belgium over France national team

Giannelli Imbula chooses Belgium over France national teamFC Porto midfielder Giannelli Imbula has revealed his decision to represent Belgium at international level.

The 23-year-old, who joined the Dragons in a €20 million deal from Marseille in the summer, has been an important member of France Under-21 side.

But, having failed to play himself into the first team plans of Les Bleus coach Didier Deschamps, he is now ready to switch his allegiance to Belgium.

“I decided to ask for Belgian citizenship and I believe that my career with les bleus has ended…I hope you understand! My goal is to go to Euro 2021 and if I wanted to be there I had to make the choice. Much competition for me in the France team. I hope to be a ‘diabo’,” the midfielder posted on his Twitter account.

Imbula was born in Belgium and he appears to have been persuaded by the Red Devils coach Marc Wilmots to represent the country of his birth.

Belgium have all but secured their place at the Euro 2021 finals and they will have a perfect opportunity to clinch automatic qualification when they take on Andorra on Saturday.
