Manchester United vs Southampton prediction

Having defeated Liverpool in the Premier League derby at the weekend, Manchester United will be looking to keep their title hopes alive with a win over Southampton on Saturday afternoon. The Saints outclassed WBA on Matchday 23, but the Red Devils are likely to pose a much bigger threat for Ronald Koeman’s men than their previous rivals.

The Wayne Rooney effect!

Manchester United do not seem to be at the top of their game, but they have been recording good results of late. The Red Devils recorded a 2-1 win over Swansea City in their first game in 2016 and following a 3-3 draw with Newcastle United the English giants recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield. Wayne Rooney has found his goal-scoring touch of late and no doubt he will be the man to watch in the home team in Saturday’s game against Southampton. Louis van Gaal can breathe easier following the triumph over Jurgen Klopp’s troops and seeing that Man Utd are just seven points behind league leaders Arsenal, the game against Saints could be crucial for the Old Trafford outfit in their battle for the Premier League title. The Red Devils have been impressive at the back this term and it has to be noted that they are after their 11th clean sheet of the season.

Michael Carrick is unlikely to recover in time to face Southampton, while Bastian Schweinsteiger is rated doubtful. Antonio Valencia has overcome his injury and he is pushing for a start. Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw remain in the recovery room.

Back-to-back wins

The 2015/2016 Premier League campaign has been a mixed bag for Southampton so far. The Saints suffered back-to-back defeats to Norwich City and Crystal Palace (FA Cup) at the start of the new year, but they quickly recovered from the losses. After beating Watford 2-0 Southampton recorded a routine 3-0 win over WBA in their last home game and they will be aiming to give fans yet another reason for celebration when they take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday. Ronald Koeman’s men sit in the top half of the table ahead of the trip to Manchester and they are eager to get their revenge on the Red Devils for a 3-2 loss in the reverse fixture. England rising star James Ward-Prowse scored a brace against Baggies, meaning that the opposition back line should have him at bay.

Jay Rodriguez, Florin Gardos and goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg have yet to recover from their respective injuries, but Gaston Ramirez is fit and he could play some part in Saturday’s game at Old Trafford.

Quick Facts

  • Man Utd are after their eighth consecutive clean sheet at home
  • Red Devils failed to beat Southampton in previous two games at Old Trafford
  • Southampton are on a four-match losing run on the road
  • Saints managed to keep a clean sheet in previous two league games
  • In their last meeting at Old Trafford Dusan Tadic scored the winner for Southampton (1-0)

Manchester United vs Southampton betting tip

Title-chasing Manchester United have no other choice but to go all guns blazing at Southampton on Saturday afternoon. The Saints have been struggling on the travels of late and seeing that Louis van Gaal’s men have already defeated Ronald Koeman’s troops in the 2015/2016 Premier League campaign, I believe that there is a certain value in betting on the hosts. Wayne Rooney has been scoring goals for fun of late and the Man Utd captain should help the team regain their place in the Champions League berth.
