Athletic Bilbao vs Eibar prediction

Athletic Bilbao will be looking for recovery in the upcoming clash against Eibar, after two consecutive losses against Barcelona. Los Armeros, on the other hand, would want to emerge victorious from the Basque derby and continue their winning streak.

Los Leones are rather efficient when playing at San Mames

Ernesto Valverde’s side suffered back-to-back loses against Barcelona in La Liga (6-0) and in the Copa del Rey (2-1). Los leones are on a three-game winless run in the league, and need to get back on winning ways as soon as possible if they plan to retain a respectable position in the league. The good thing for Athletic Bilbao is that they are undefeated on home turf in previous six encounters in the Primera Division (W4 D2). The Lion’s attack rarely fails to produce in Bilbao this season, only Malaga and Barcelona managed to keep a clean sheet at San Mames. Furthermore, the Basques scored more than 2.5 goals per game on average in their last six home fixtures in all competitions. Their efficiency mostly depends on the veteran Aritz Aduriz (11) and the youngster Inaki Williams (6), who have been producing well in recent games and will most certainly present a handfull for los Armero’s defense. On the other hand, Bilbao’s defensive line, that was one of their main weapons on home ground this season, recenlty started to show signs of weakness, since they conceded two goals in each of their last three fixtures at San Mames in all competitions. Bearing in mind that their goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz is suspended for this clash, there is a high possibility Athletic will not manage to keep a clean sheet in yet another domestic fixture.

Concerning the unavailable players, apart from the abovementioned Gorka Iraizoz, who is suspended for this match, the biggest problem for the Basques is the absence of Raul Garcia, who is still in the recovery room because of his knee injury.

The unstoppable Eibar

Eibar started the New Year in the same manner they finished the old one – victoriously! The team that battled against relegation last term, can now hope for a place that would secure them European qualification next season, provided they continue the good run. Jose Louis Mendilibar’s side boast a 4-0-0 record in previous four games, with an amazing 13/2 goal difference. Their last la Liga encounter against Granada (5-1) proved that the Gunners are in incredible form at the moment and it seems like nothing can stop them from securing a high position in the Primera Division. Borja Baston (12) and Sergi Enrich (6) scored more than half of Eibar’s goals this season, they have been outstanding in recent matches and will pose the biggest danger for los Leones’ defensive line. Although los Armeros’ attack proved to be rather toothless in their previous visits to San Mames, this season is quite different and I firmly believe Eibar players can put at least one goal to their name, especially given the fact that Athletic’s main goalkeeper Iraizoz is suspended for this match.

Jose Luis Mendilibar has almost his entire team at disposal. Jaime, Mikel Arruabarrena and Gonzalo Escalante are in the recovery room and will miss the upcoming clash.

Quick facts

  • Athletic Bilbao are on a six-game unbeaten run on home turf in La Liga (W4 D2)
  • Los Leones failed to score just twice in previous sixteen matches at San Mames in all competitions
  • Eibar boast a 4-0-0 record in their last four league games
  • Los Armeros netted at least a goal in nine of their last ten games in all competitions
  • Both of their previous matches in Bilbao ended in a draw

Las Palmas vs Eibar betting tip

Even though Ernesto Valverde’s side are shaken by the recent run of results, the fact of the matter is that the lion is the most dangerous when wounded. Eibar have been of the highest standard recently, but they have never recorded a triumph in Bilbao, and I think that this clash could easily go either way. The tip that seems most promising to me is that both teams will score.

Tip: Both teams to score
