Lorient vs Marseille prediction

Saturday’s match at Stade Yves Allainmat – Le Moustoir pits together Lorient and Olympique Marseille, the two teams who are level on points ahead of Matchday 30. OM are desperate to put an end to their five game winless run in the league, but beating les Merlus on the road is easier said than done.

One loss in last six home games

Over the years Lorient have established themselves as a genuine mid-table side in French Ligue 1. Les Merlus are sitting in 12th place in the standings at the moment and the team’s goal is to finish the season in the top half of the table. Following back-to-back wins over the likes of Guingamp and Troyes, the team played out a goalless draw with Bastia at the weekend and they will be aiming to return to winning ways in the national championship when they host Marseille at their Stade Yves Allainmat – Le Moustoir on Saturday afternoon. Lorient are tough to beat at home ground and the fact that they suffered only one loss in previous six home fixtures is giving the fans a reason for optimism ahead of the visit of OM. In Benjamin Moukandjo’s absence Abdul Waris should lead the attack for the hosts against Marseille.

The likes of Paye, Moukandjo, Fofana, Jouffre and Lautoa are all likely to miss the game with injury, but there are no suspended players in the home team.

Season to forget

Olympique Marseille have been playing below expectations this season. OM have been struggling in front of goal in the 2015/2016 Ligue 1 campaign and seeing that they have not been impressive at the back as well, it is no surprise they are sitting in 11th place in the standings ahead of Matchday 30. The team, though, could still book their place in the European competitions, but they need to raise their form as soon as possible if they are to meet the goal. Marseille dropped a one-goal advantage in a 1-1 draw with Gazelec Ajaccio at the weekend, but you should bear in mind that Michel’s men extended their unbeaten run on the road to ten games. January signing Steven Fletcher failed to impress in the 1-1 draw with Ajaccio and I would not be surprised if he drops to the bench. Anyhow, a man to watch in the away team will be top scorer Michy Batshuayi.

Lucas Ocampos has overcome his injury, but Lassana Diarra remains in the recovery room. Florian Thauvin is pushing for a start after he came as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Ajaccio.

Quick Facts

  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in five of Lorient’s last six home games
  • Les Merlus scored six goals in previous two meetings with Marseille
  • Olympique Marseille are on a ten-game unbeaten run on the travels
  • OM played out a 1-1 draw with each of their previous four rivals in Ligue 1
  • Michel’s men failed to beat Lorient in previous three meetings between the two sides

Lorient vs Marseille betting tip

Marseille are having a season to forget and I do not believe that there is a big value in betting on the out-of-form visitors. Lorient are a real force to be reckoned with at home, but given that top scorer Moukandjo misses the match with injury, home win should not be considered as well. The two teams played out a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture and, taking everything into account, a low-scoring affair appears on the cards.

Tip: Under 2.5 goals
