Spain Euro 2021 squad slowly taking shape

As reigning European champions, the Spain national team will be under extra pressure at the Euro 2021 finals, especially having ended the brilliant run of results at major competitions by crashing out of the 2014 World Cup in group stage.

La Furia Roja secured their place at the showpiece tournament in spite of some problems along the way and they have since been placed in Group D alongside Croatia, Czech Republic and Turkey.

The preparations for the tournament finals are about to start with Spain facing Italy (24.03.), Romania (27.03.), Bosnia-Herzegovina (29.05.), Korea Republic (01.06.) and Georgia (07.06.) in warm-up games, and the latest reports suggest Vicente Del Bosque already knows the names of most players he will take to France.

The amazing Aritz Aduriz is reportedly set to receive a call-up for the March friendlies, thus ending a four-year exile from the national team, and that would certainly be a just reward for his heroics with Athletic Bilbao over the last couple of years.

However, the veteran striker faces an uphill battle to make Del Bosque’s finals squad as Diego Costa, Alvaro Morata and Paco Alcacer have the advantage at the moment.

Vicente Del Bosque will name a 30-man provisional squad on 17 May, and Atletico Madrid striker Borja Baston is expected to be on the list after impressing while on loan at Eibar, although he is highly unlikely to keep his place in the final 23-man squad that will be unveiled on 28 May.

Spain face problems in the heart of defence since Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique and Raul Albiol are the only central defenders playing on regular basis, with Marc Bartra and Nacho hoping to make the cut as well.

Chances are that Javi Martinez will be included, partly due to his versatility and the head coach will travel to Germany to make a check on his fitness levels after a spell on the sidelines.

His Bayern Munich teammates Thiago Alcantara and Juan Bernat are in the mix as well, while youngsters Jesus Vallejo and Jorge Mere could be given the opportunity as well.

There have been some bad news for Vicente Del Bosque as it was revealed that Santi Cazorla’s injury was more serious than first feared, with the Arsenal midfielder now rated doubtful for the Euro 2021 finals.
