Celta vs Atletico Madrid prediction

Estadio de Balaidos will host Copa del Rey game between Celta Vigo and Atletico Madrid. A place in the Spanish Cup semi-finals is at stake and no doubt there will be fireworks when the two teams take on each other in Galicia on Wednesday.

Entertaining victory over Levante

Following back-to-back defeats to the likes of Malaga and Atletico Madrid, Celta Vigo finally recorded their first league win of the new year, with the team beating Levante 4-3 at their Estadio de Balaidos at the weekend. Os Celeste returned to winning ways in the national championship and thanks to the triumph the team stayed in the race for a place in the Champions League. Eduardo Berizzo’s troops have big ambitions for the 2015/2016 Copa del Rey campaign as well, but they will have a big fish to fry in the two-legged tie against high-flying Atletico Madrid. Celta Vigo will need to be at their sharpest if they are to record a good result in the first leg and there is every chance the hosts will adopt a cautious approach in Wednesday’s clash against los Rojiblancos. John Guidetti scored a brace in the 4-3 win over Levante and he is widely expected to lead the line for the hosts against Levante.

Nolito is a major doubt, while defender Andreu Fontas is sidelined with injury. Coach Eduardo Berizzo has no fresh injury worries ahead of the visit of Atletico Madrid.

Splendid form

Thanks to a 3-0 win at Las Palmas Atletico Madrid extended their winning run in La Liga to four games. Los Rojiblancos managed to keep their fourth consecutive clean sheet in the national championship and no doubt they head into the Copa del Rey game against Celta Vigo high on confidence. Diego Simeone’s men have already defeated Os Celeste at Estadio de Balaidos in 2016 (La Liga), meaning that the capital club should consider the trip to Galicia appealing. It has to be noted, though, that the team’s main goal is to regain Primera Division trophy, meaning that coach Diego Simeone could mix the squad against Celta. Jackson Martinez is likely to be recalled to the starting line-up and he will certainly give 100% to find his scoring boots as he has netted no more than two goals in the 2015/2016 La Liga campaign to date. Anyhow, los Rojiblancos, who have been impressive at the back this season, should rely on their rock-solid defence in the first leg.

Fernando Torres and Tiago Mendes both miss the game with injury, but Diego Simeone has no fresh selection worries ahead of the Copa del Rey clash. Antoine Griezmann should drop to the bench.

Quick Facts

  • Celta Vigo failed to score in two of their past three home games
  • Os Celeste recorded one win over Atletico in last nine meetings between the two sides
  • Atletico Madrid are after their 20th clean sheet of the season
  • Diego Simeone’s men are eyeing their 11th Copa del Rey trophy
  • Los Rojiblancos managed to keep three clean sheets in last four away games

Celta vs Atletico Madrid betting tip

Atletico Madrid have been in a thrilling form of late and despite the fact that Diego Simeone is going to stick to his rotation policy, I am positive that los Rojiblancos will grab something from Wednesday’s clash. As I have already mentioned, the capital club have been impressive at the back of late and seeing that top scorer Antoine Griezmann is likely to start from the bench, I would not be surprised if we see a low-scoring affair at Estadio de Balaidos.

Tip: Under 2.5 goals
