Atletico Madrid vs Celta Vigo prediction

Having dropped two points in Sunday’s La Liga game agaisnt Sevilla, Atletico Madrid will be lookng to return to winning ways when they host Celta Vigo at their Estadio Vicente Calderon in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey game.

Five consecutive clean sheets

Atletico Madrid failed to turn their dominance into goals in Sunday’s La Liga game against ten-man Sevilla and, as a result, they dropped to second place in the standings. On the other hand, los Rojiblancos played out a goalless draw with Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, first leg, meaning that they need to go for a win in the second leg. It is well known that Atletico Madrid are a real force to be reckoned with at home and the fact that they are after their sixth consecutive clean sheet in all competitions is giving the fans a reason for optimism. Diego Simeone’s men are eyeing their 11th Spanish Cup trophy, but they will have to be at their sharpest if they are to eliminate Os Celeste in the quarter-finals. Antoine Griezmann has been misfiring of late, but he is likely to pose a big threat for the opposition defenders.

Fernando Torres remains in the recovery room, but midfielder has overcome his injury and he should play some part in Wednesday’s game against Celta Vigo. Tiago Mendes is sidelined with injury as well.

Heavy defeat to Rayo

Celta Vigo did well to hold Atletico Madrid to a goalless draw in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, first leg, but they suffered a shocking 3-0 loss to relegation strugglers Rayo Vallecano in the suburbs of Madrid at the weekend. Coach Eduardo Berizzo, though, could not count on several first-team regulars for the Rayo game and it has to be noted that top scorer Nolito has been sorely missed ever since he joined Andreu Fontas on the sidelines. Celta Vigo do not seem to be at the top of their game at the moment and with Atletico Madrid next, they are unlikely to start a new winning run on Wednesday evening. In Nolito’s absence a man to watch in the away side will be Iago Aspas, who has recovered in time to face los Rojiblancos. Eduardo Berizzo’s men eliminated Cadiz in the Copa del Rey last 16, but it remains to be seen if they are capable of shocking the star-studded capital club at Estadio Vicente Calderon.
Iago Aspas and Daniel Wass both return to contention after missing the Rayo game with injury, but Iago Aspas,

Nolito and Marcelo Diaz remain in the treatment room. Youngsters Borja Fernandez, David Goldar and Pape Cheikh are all in contention to face Atletico Madrid.

Quick Facts

  • Atletico Madrid are after their fifth consecutive clean sheet at home
  • Los Rojiblancos have conceded two goals in Copa del Rey this season
  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in three of Atletico’s previous four home fixtures
  • Celta Vigo failed to score in previous two games against Atletico Madrid
  • Os Celeste recorded their last win at “Calderon” back in 2007

Atletico Madrid vs Celta Vigo betting tip

Atletico Madrid failed to beat Sevilla at the weekend, but they are definitely capable of beating Celta Vigo, who experienced all sorts of problems in the 3-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano. Los Rojiblancos have been impressive at home ground this season and I believe that they will record a win over Os Celeste that will help them make it to the Copa del Rey semis.

Tip: Atletico Madrid to win
