Schalke striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar is seriously thinking about retiring from international football, according to Voetbal International.
The 32-year-old has been very disappointed by not playing a single minute in March friendlies and he could quit Oranje ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
Huntelaar had longed played second fiddle to Robin van Persie despite consistently outperforming the Fenerbahce strike in the national team, and he expected to become the number one striker after the former Manchester United star was left out of the squad on several occasions.
However, Netherlands coach Danny Blind played Luuk de Jong and newcomers Vincent Janssen in international friendlies against France and England instead.
And since Huntelaar is no longer prepared to wait for his chance in the national team, he could soon announce his retirement from international football.
The experienced striker will go down as one of the most prolific forwards in the history of Oranje, having scored 42 goals in 76 outings.
The record becomes even more impressive when we take into account that Huntelaar only started 43 of those games, while making another 33 substitute appearances.
