Montpellier vs Lyon prediction

High-flying Olympique Lyon will be looking to strengthen their grip on third place in the Ligue 1 standings with a win over Montpellier at Stade de la Mosson. La Paillade aim to escape the danger zone, meaning that an interesting encounter is on the cards.

Four-game winless run

Montpellier finished the 2014/2015 Ligue 1 campaign in seventh place in the Ligue 1 standings, just seven points behind the Europa League berth, but they have not been as successful this season. La Paillade sit in 16th position in the standings with six matches go until the end of the 2015/2016 Ligue 1 campaign and the team’s main goal is to secure yet another top flight survival. Frederic Hantz’s troops have been struggling to find their form of late and they will be looking to stop the run of four-games without a win when they take on in-form Lyon at their Stade de la Mosson. Montpellier failed to score in three of their last three league matches, meaning that they face an uphill task in Friday’s Ligue 1 game against les Gones.

Morgan Sanson missed a number of league games with injury, but he is now fully fit and the 21-year-old midfielder, who scored a brace in a 2-2 draw with Guingamp, is likely to keep his place in the starting XI. The likes of Congre and Ninga both return from suspension.

Les Gones eager to regain their place in the Champions League

Olympique Lyon were struggling to find their best form in the first half of the season, but the French giants have been impressive in 2016 in the Ligue 1. Les Gones are sitting in the Champions League berth ahead of Matchday 33, but given that they are just one point clear of fourth-placed Rennes, there is every chance the visitors will go all guns blazing at Montpellier when the two teams take on each other at Stade de la Mosson on Friday evening. Bruno Genesio’s team recorded four wins in previous five league matches and it has to be noted that les Gones have been scoring goals for fun of late. Key attacker Alexandre Lacazette added two goals to his goal-scoring account in the 3-1 win over Lorient at the weekend and the opposition defenders are likely to have their work cut out for them when facing the Arsenal target.

Rafael and Maxime Gonalons both return to contention after missing the Lorient game through suspension. Mathieu Valbuena has overcome his injury and he is likely to be recalled to the starting XI.

Quick Facts

  • Montpellier failed to find the net in three of their previous four league matches
  • La Paillade suffered four defeats in last six home fixtures in Ligue 1
  • Lyon scored 2+ goals in each of their last five league games
  • Les Gones are eyeing their sixth away win of the season
  • 18 goals were netted in previous three meetings between the two teams

Montpellier vs Lyon betting tip

Lyon have been in a much better form than Montpellier of late and les Gones are widely expected to extend their winning run in the league. Montpellier’s top flight status is not in danger at the moment and given that Bruno Genesio’s men are desperate to regain their spot in the Champions League group stages, I am tempted to put my money on Alexandre Lacazette and his teammates this time out.

Tip: Lyon to win
