Hamburg vs Werder Bremen prediction

Hamburg and Werder Bremen face each other in the relegation six-pointer at Volksparkstadion. Die Werderaner recorded a very important win over Wolfsburg at the weekend, but beating die Rothosen on the road is easier said than done.

Back-to-back defeats

Hamburg are not enjoying a season to remember and, as things stand now, the team will be desperately fighting for the Bundesliga survival in the remainder of the season. Die Rothosen are just three points clear of bottom three and they head into Friday’s relegation six-pointer against Werder Bremen with the lack of confidence. Bruno Labbadia’s men suffered back-to-back defeats to the likes of Darmstadt and Borussia Dortmund in previous two league games and it has to be noted that they failed to make life difficult for the Millionaires whose boss Thomas Tuchel rested a number of first-team regulars in the Signal-Iduna-Park clash. Friday’s game against die Werderaner could be crucial for Hamburg in their battle for the Bundesliga survival and, no doubt, the hosts will leave their hearts on the field this time out. Die Rothosen have recorded just four wins at home this season, but this one could be vital for the relegation-threatened team.

Rene Adler misses the match through suspension, while the likes of Ekdal, Drmic and Olic are all sidelined with injury. Coach Bruno Labbadia is likely to stick to the 4-2-3-1 formation. Lasogga should be deployed up front as a lone forward.

Better performances than results

Werder Bremen face an uphill task in the season finale. Die Werderaner are sitting in 16th place in the Bundesliga standings ahead of Matchday 31 and they are just four points clear automatic relegation places. Viktor Skripnik’s troops did well to beat star-studded Wolfsburg in their last league match, with the team putting an end to their four-game winless run in the national championship, but they need to keep on making progress if they are to secure yet another elite division survival. Werder Bremen produced a fine performance in Tuesday’s game against Bayern Munich, but they eventually failed to make it to the German Cup final. Werder Bremen are likely to stick to their attacking style of play in Friday’s match against Hamburger and it remains to be seen if they are capable of recording a win that should help them escape the danger zone. Experienced forward Claudio Pizarro is likely to lead the line for the visitors against Hamburg.

The likes of Wolf, Zetterer and Johannsson are all out of contention. Nigerian attacker Ujah is likely to be recalled to the starting line-up after he came as a substitute in the 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich.

Quick Facts

  • Hamburg scored 1+ goals in each of their last seven home games in Bundesliga
  • Die Rothosen failed to keep a clean sheet in ten of their last 11 home matches
  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in four of last five meetings between the two teams
  • Werder Bremen are on a three-game losing run on the road
  • Die Werderaner conceded 10 goals in last three away fixtures

Hamburg vs Werder Bremen betting tip

The stake is big in this one. Both sides aim to secure the Bundesliga survival and there is every chance both Hamburg and Werder Bremen will adopt a cautious approach in Friday’s clash at Volksparkstadion. In four of their last five meetings under 2.5 goals were scored and, taking everything into account, a low-scoring encounter appears on the cards.

Tip: Under 2.5 goals
