Petkovic finalises Switzerland Euro 2021 squad

Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic has named a 23-man squad for Euro 2021, with the experienced tactician leaving the likes of Philippe Senderos, Renato Steffen, Yvon Mvogo, Luca Zuffi and Silvan Widmer out of the final roster.

The Rossocrociati have been drawn alongside Albania, Romania and France in Group A at the upcoming showpiece tournament and they will take on Moldova on 3 June in their final warm-up game.

Coach Vladimir Petkovic has discarded five players from the provisional squad: Philippe Senderos, Yvon Mvogo, Renato Steffen, Luca Zuffi and Silvan Widmer, with captain Gokhan Ilner failing to make the cut as well.

Petkovic has left Senderos out of the squad as the former Arsenal man “was struggling” to find his best form with Grasshopper last season.

“Tired legs” proved to be the biggest problem for Zuffi, while Widmer has been overlooked at the Switzerland coach has a number of high-profile defenders to choose from.

Switzerland kick off their Euro 2021 campaign with a match against Albania on 11 June.

Switzerland Euro 2021 squad:

Goalkeepers: Yann Sommer (Borussia Monchengladbach), Roman Burki (Borussia Dortmund), Marwin Hitz (Augsburg)

Defenders: Johan Djourou (Hamburg), Nico Elvedi (Borussia Mochengladbach), Michael Lang (Basel), Stephan Lichsteiner (Juventus), Francois Moubandje (Toulouse), Ricardo Rodriguez (Wolfsburg), Fabian Schar (Hoffenheim), Steve von Bergen (Young Boys).
