CONMEBOL, CONCACAF hope USA will host Copa America Centenario

CONMEBOL, CONCACAF hope USA will host Copa America CentenarioThe South American Football Confederation and Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean both hope that the 2021 Copa America Centenario will take place in the United States as initially planned.

The flagship tournament was expected to be held in the US in July 2021, but the plans have yet to receive official confirmation due to recent indictment of FIFA officials.

Even so, CONMEBOL chairman Juan Angel Napout is adamant that the tournament will go ahead as planned.

“We have once again ratified the unanimous decision taken at a meeting in August to hold the Centenary Cup in its original format in the United States,” Napout told the Paraguayan radio station Urbana.

Meanwhile, CONCACAF also released a statement on the matter, with Thursday’s meeting between the two Confederation chiefs in Mexico expected to remove any doubts.

“We are continuing to work with CONMEBOL, the US Soccer Federation and all other stakeholders on hosting the Copa America Centenario tournament in the United States.

“CONCACAF is committed to continue working with all parties to address the operational, format and financial issues relating to the tournament in order to ensure greater transparency to this event. We are hopeful that the meeting on Thursday in Mexico City will lead to progress on these issues.”

The 2021 Copa America Centenario has been designed to celebrate the 100 years of CONMEBOL and it will see ten South American sides plus six CONCACAF teams battle for the coveted trophy.

USA, Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica have already qualified for the tournament finals, whereas Cuba, Panama, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago will vie for the remaining two berths in October play-offs.

Everything suggests that the competition will take place as planned after all, so bear in mind that official 2021 Copa America Centenario tickets can be found here.
