Athletic Bilbao vs Atletico Madrid prediction

Atletico Madrid are level on points with league leaders Barcelona ahead of the trip to the Basque Country, but los Rojiblancos could regain top position in the standings with a win over Athletic Bilbao at San Mames Barria. The Lions defeated Malaga at Estadio La Rosaleda at the weekend, but beating Diego Simeone’s team is easier said than done.

Better result than performance against Malaga

Athletic Bilbao were more than fortunate to beat Rayo Vallecano in their last home game in La Liga and despite being totally outplayed by Malaga at Estadio La Rosaleda at the weekend, the Lions eventually recorded a 1-0 win over los Boquerones. Ernesto Valcerde’s men regained a much-needed confidence following their elimination in the Europa League knockout stages and they will be fully focused on the national championship in the remainder of the season. The bad news for the fans is that top scorer Aritz Aduriz is likely to miss the rest of the season with injury and I believe that he will be sorely missed in Wednesday’s derby against Atletico Madrid. Inaki Williams, though, has overcome his injury, and he will be the man to watch in the home team.

Aritz Aduriz is definitely out of contention with injury, but aforementioned winger Inaki Williams is fit and he should be deployed up front as a lone forward. The likes of Aymeric Laporte and Sabin Merino are both sidelined through injury.

Excellent form

Atletico Madrid won the La Liga title two seasons ago and they are now on a quest to regain the trophy they lifted in the 2013/2014 campaign. Los Rojiblancos have been producing thrilling performances of late and thanks to a 3-0 win over Granada Diego Simeone’s men melted Barca’s advantage in the La Liga standings. The two teams are level on points ahead of Matchday 34, but the capital club face a difficult task in Wednesday’s game against Athletic Bilbao. Antoine Griezmann failed to score against Granada, but the French attacker is undisputedly the team’s key player and all eyes will be on him when the two teams take on each other at San Mames Barria. The Lions head into the match with a severely-weakened squad and the visitors will certainly give their all to take advantage of the situation. Atletico Madrid are after their fourth consecutive win in La Liga.

Filipe Luis returns to the starting line-up after missing the Granada game through suspension. Midfielder Tiago Mendes is sidelined with injury, while defender Jose Gimenez remains a doubt.

Quick Facts

  • Athletic Bilbao scored exactly one goal in each of their last three home games
  • Atletico Madrid demolished Athetic in their last meeting at San Mames
  • Atletico Madrid recorded four wins in last five away games in La Liga
  • Los Rojiblancos are undefeated in last seven meetings with Bilbao
  • Athletic Bilbao suffered six defeats in last seven encounters against los Rojiblancos

Athletic Bilbao vs Atletico Madrid betting tip

Atletico Madrid are high on confidence ahead of the San Mames Barria clash and seeing that Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde has a number of injury worries ahead of the game, I am tempted to put my money on Antoine Griezmann and Co, who are eager to regain the domestic trophy they won two seasons ago.

Tip: Atletico Madrid to win

Odds: 2.00 (1/1) @bet365
