Serbia claim Under20 World Cup title

Serbia beat Brazil in U20 World Cup finalSerbia produced an inspired performance to defeat Brazil in the U20 World Cup final and lift the coveted title in New Zealand.

Veljko Paunovic’s charges recorded a 2-1 win after extra time, with midfielder Nemanja Maksimovic netting the winner in the dying moments of the match.

Serbia had moved in front thanks to Stanisa Mandic midway through the second period, but the lead only lasted for three minutes as Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira scored a brilliant solo goal.

The match eventually took to extra time and just when it appeared it was headed for the penalty shoot-out, Serbia produced an incisive breakaway, with Andrija Zivkovic putting Maksimovic clean on goal and the Astana player coolly slotting home past Jean.

The Eagles then went on to miss another clear-cut chance, but they eventually claimed their first ever Under20 World Cup trophy.

After losing to Uruguay in the opening fixture, Serbia defeated Mali and Mexico in the group stage, before eliminating United States on penalties and Hungary, Mali and Brazil on extra time to produced one of the biggest coups in the history of the national team.

Captain Predrag Rajkovic was voted the Best Goalkeeper at the tournament, while Mali’s Adama Traore claimed the Player of the Tournament title.
