Geoff Cameron reveals reason behind 2015 Gold Cup exclusion

Geoff Cameron USMNTStoke City defender Geoff Cameron has moved to reveal why he will not be representing his country at the upcoming Gold Cup finals.

The 29-year-old has been an important member of the United States national team ever since Jurgen Klinsmann took over the reigns, starting three matches at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Cameron was surprisingly left out of the squad for friendly matches against Netherlands and Germany earlier this month and he then also failed to make the provisional USMNT squad for 2015 Gold Cup.

But, while some believed that he might have clashed with the head coach, the defender has revealed that it was his club who had asked him to skip the tournament finals.

“@GeoffCameron telling us that Stoke City asked that he skip this summer’s Gold Cup to get healthy for the start of the EPL season,” ESPN’s Soccer Today wrote in their official Twitter account.

The likes of John Brooks, Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez and Ventura Alvarado will be vying for two centre-back positions in Cameron’s absence, with Jurgen Klinsmann expected to name his final squad in the coming days.

USA head into the tournament finals they will co-host with Canada in excellent spirits, having defeated European powerhouses Netherlands and Germany a couple of weeks back.
