Mexico vs Uruguay Team News

Hector Herrera returned to the starting line-up against Chile and the Porto midfielder is likely to keep his place in the starting XI. The likes of Carlos Vela and Giovani dos Santos have been overlooked, while goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa should return to the starting line-up after he was rested against La Roja. Javier Hernandez Chicharito is pushing for a start as well. The bad news for the fans is that Jurgen Damm misses the Copa America Centenario with injury. Candido Ramirez stepped up.

Injured: Jurgen Damm

Key attacker Luis Suarez misses the match with injury, but he could recover in time to face Venezuela in the second group game. Uruguay defenders Sebastian Coates and Martin Caceres had been ruled out earlier (both injury), but the likes of Edinson Cavani, Cristian Stuani and Abel Hernandez made the final roster. Diego Laxalt has replaced injured winger Cristian Rodriguez, but Atletico Madrid duo Diego Godin – Jose Gimenez returns to contention after missing the Trinidad game due to club commitments. Nicolas Lodeiro has overcome his minor injury and he should start, while Diego Rolan should replace Luis Suarez in the starting XI.

Quick Facts

  • Uruguay scored in previous eight meetings with Mexico
  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in Uruguay’s last four matches at Copa America
  • Edinson Cavani has netted 27 goals in 76 appearances for the Uruguay national team
  • Mexico are on a nine-game winning run ahead of the Uruguay game
  • Over 2.5 goals were scored in five of Uruguay’s last six matches

Mexico vs Uruguay Prediction

Both Mexico and Uruguay aim to kick off their Copa America Centenario campaign on a high, but seeing that La Celeste will be without their star player Luis Suarez in their opener, I believe that there is a certain value in betting on El Tri this time out. The Mexicans have been in a fine form in 2016 and they are definitely capable of beating Uruguay at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Betting Tip: Mexico to win

Odds: 2.50 (3/2) @Unibet
