Borussia Dortmund vs Tottenham prediction

All eyes will be at Signal-Iduna-Park when Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur take on each other in the Europa League last 16, first leg. The two teams seem to be evenly matched at the moment and an entertaining match is on the cards.

The invincible Millionaires

Borussia Dortmund have been producing outstanding performances under Thomas Tuchel. The Millionaires are breathing down Bayern Munich’s neck in the race for the Bundesliga trophy and thanks to back-to-back wins over Porto the team made it to the Europa League last 16. Borussia Dortmund are on a 15-game unbeaten run at the moment and it has to be noted that they suffered their last defeat on 19 December, 2015. The Millionaires head into Thursday’s clash against Tottenham following a goalless draw with Bayern Munich and they are definitely capable of grabbing something from the match. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been scoring goals for fun this season and the opposition defenders could find it hard to contain the Gabon international. Borussia Dortmund aim to get their job done in front of home fans and no doubt the hosts will adopt an attack-minded approach in Thursday’s match. The Millionaires are a real force to be reckoned with at home and you should know that they recorded six wins in previous seven home games in the Europa League.

Defender Papastathopoulos misses the match with a groin injury, but coach Thomas Tuchel has no other selection worries ahead of the visit of Tottenham Hotspur. Midfielder Nuri Sahin could return to the starting line-up after he came as a substitute in the Bundesliga derby at the weekend.

Brilliant win over Viola

Tottenham Hotspur have been producing thrilling performances this season as well. Mauro Pochettino is doing a great job with the White Hart Lane outfit and they are on the right track to secure their place in the Champions League. The Spurs sit in second place in the Premier League standings and, who knows, they could win the domestic trophy as well. On the other hand, Tottenham set up a meeting with Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League last 16 with a routine 3-0 victory over Fiorentina and they will be looking to build on the performance when they take on Borussia on Thursday evening. Mauro Pochettino’s men have suffered only one loss in previous 14 away games in all competitions, but the match against the Millionaires will be anything but a walk in the park for the visitors. Harry Kane did not play against Fiorentina, but the team’s top scorer is widely expected to lead the line for the visitors against Borussia Dortmund.

The likes of Njie and Vertonghen are both sidelined with injury, while midfielder Dele Alli misses the match through suspension. Nacer Chadli is likely to drop to the bench after he started the game against Fiorentina.

Quick Facts

  • Borussia Dortmund are on a 15-game unbeaten run
  • Millionaires managed to keep a clean sheet in six of their last seven games
  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in five of Tottenham’s last six away games in EL
  • Spurs are on a five-game unbeaten run in the process
  • Tottenham defeated Bayer Leverkusen at BayArena in the 2005/2006 EL campaign

Borussia Dortmund vs Tottenham Hotspur betting tip

Both sides have been in a brilliant form this season and there is every chance we will enjoy watching Thursday’s Europa League clash. However, seeing that Signal-Iduna-Park will host the match, I believe that there is a certain value in betting on Borussia Dortmund, who are tough to beat at home. It is well known that the Premier League sides often don’t take the Europa League game seriously and, taking everything into account, home win should be considered.

Tip: Borussia Dortmund to win
