Gareca announces Peru squad for Paraguay, Brazil

Gareca announces Peru squad for Paraguay, BrazilPeru national team coach Ricardo Garreca has announced a 26-man squad for the 2018 World Cup qualifying matches against Paraguay and Brazil.

The Peruvians have been struggling at the start of their World Cup qualifying campaign. La Blanquirroja suffered a 2-0 defeat to Colombia at Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendeez, while losing to Chile (4-3) in Lima in their second group game.

Upcoming matches against Paraguay and Brazil are of big importance for Peru and you should have in mind that coach Ricardo Garreca has named 14 footballers in the squad that are not playing in the domestic championship.

Experienced forward Claudio Pizarro (Werder Bremen) is still part of the team, but Al Jazira attacker Jefferson Farfan, who scored a brace in the 4-3 loss to Chile, will be the man to watch in Ricardo Garreca’s team when la Blanquirroja square off against Paraguay (Saturday) and Brazil (Wednesday).

Real Garcilaso midfielder Edwin Retamoso returns to contention, with experienced defender Edgar Villamarin also being included in the squad for the upcoming qualifying matches.

Real Betis full-back Juan Manuel Vargas is included despite struggling through a knee injury, whereas Christian Cueva also keeps his place even though he is suspended for the Paraguay match.

It has to be noted that Raul Ruidiaz is back to the squad for the first time since April after scoring 12 goals in as many league matches. The 25-year-old attacker has 10 caps for the Peru national team.
