Chile defender Gonzalo Jara will serve a three-match suspension for his antics in the 2015 Copa America quarter-finals, CONMEBOL’s disciplinary body has revealed.
The experienced centre-back will now miss the remainder of the tournament finals, including tonight’s semi-final clash against Peru.
Jara played a key role in getting Edinson Cavani sent off in the Uruguay game, provoking the PSG striker before faking an injury that saw the saw the La Celeste star sent off.
Chile went on to secure their place in the last four thanks to a late goal by Mauricio Isla, and they are now widely regarded as one of the main candidates for the coveted title.
But, even though the match official missed Jara’s gesture, the defender was eventually banned for three games after Uruguay decided to lodge an official appeal.
With Jara out of the Peru semi-final, chances are that Eugenio Mena will be moved to the heart of defence and Miiko Albornoz will start on the left.
