Portugal star Tiago Mendes could miss the 2021 European Championships after breaking his leg at the weekend.
The experienced midfielder helped the Selecao book their place at the tournament finals by starting five Euro 2021 qualifiers, but his presence in France is now in major doubt.
Namely, Atletico Madrid have moved to confirm that Tiago had suffered a broken tibia in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Espanyol.
“After an initial examination by the medical services of the club, the Portuguese was taken to hospital for further radiological tests,” a statement on Atletico’s official website read.
“The final medical report indicated that (he) suffered a non-displaced (fracture) in the middle of the right tibia.”
And while los Colchoneros did not disclose the expected recovery period, chances are that Tiago will miss the remainder of the season.
There is a slim chance that he will recover in time to earn his place at the Euro 2021, taking place from 10 June to 10 July in France.
