Sergio Markarian resigns as Greece national team coach

Sergio Markarian quits as Greece coachUruguayan coach Sergio Markarian has announced that he is resigning from the post as Greece national team boss.

The experienced tactician was appointed as a replacement for Claudio Ranieri back in February, but having failed to help Ethniki improve their results, the 70-year-old believed that offering his resignation would be the right thing to do.

“I came to Greece for the national team at a critical moment. I apologise to the Greek fans because the results in our struggles were not good,” Markarian said in a statement.

“I thank God for the opportunity I was given. I did my work from day one with great love for the work I do. I want to thank the players, the fans, the federation and my colleagues as well as the media for the respect they showed me.”

Greek Football Federation chairman Giorgos Girtzikis will have a meeting with the Uruguayan coach on Wednesday to hear the reasons behind his decision before making his next move.

However, the president hinted earlier today that he would not accept the resignation as he believed Markarian was the right man for the job.

Greece have all but lost all chances to qualify for the Euro 2021 finals after taking mere two points from first six games, with double defeat to Faroe Islands the low point of their campaign.

The team shared spoils with Hungary and Poland while losing to the Faroes on the road under Markarian, but that was still better than Claudio Ranieri had done.
