Zenit forward Danny will not be representing Portugal at the Euro 2021 finals as he suffered a serious injury, it has been revealed.
The 32-year-old ruptured a cruciate ligament and meniscus in his knee in the weekend’s clash vs Spartak Moscow, meaning he has been ruled out of the tournament finals.
Danny is expected to miss between six and eight months of action, meaning he could fail to play again in 2016.
This is another major headache for Portugal coach Fernando Santos, who has already stayed without starting left-back Fabio Coentrao.
Having shown a great deal of promise under the former Greece boss, the Selecao is expected to go far at the Euro 2021, but it remains to be seen how they will cope with the latest blow.
While Benfica full-back Eliseu is expected to deputise for Coentrao, the likes of Bernardo Silva and Andre Gomes are vying for a chance to replace Danny in the starting line-up.
