Red Star left-back Luis Ibanez could be a surprise inclusion for the Croatian Euro 2021 squad.
Considering that first-choice defender Josip Pivaric has suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury that will keep him out of the 2016 European Championship finals, in-form Luis Ibanez could be awarded a Euro 2021 berth.
Argentine-born left-back holds Croatian citizenship and Luis Ibanez had previously stated that he would like to play for Croatia, as he was not capped for Argentina at senior level.
Ibanez has had a successful season so far with Red Star in the Serbian Super Liga following his summer transfer from Dinamo Zagreb, where he spent seven years since 2008 to 2015.
Having scored a couple of key goals for the Belgrade powerhouse, Luis Ibanez has been the key player for Miodrag Bozovic’s team and call-up to the Croatian national team would be a huge recognition for the left-back.
“It would be a huge honour to play for Croatia at the Euro 2021, but it would also be an important recognition for Red Star,” Ibanez told the Serbian media.
Croatia have been drawn in group D of the 2016 European Championship finals together with Spain, Czech Republic and Turkey.
