Belgium pip Italy to top seed in Euro 2021 draw

Belgium pip Italy to top seed in Euro 2021 drawThe national team of Belgium will be seeded for the 2021 European Championships draw after they narrowly secured a fifth place in the UEFA National Ranking.

The Red Devils will climb to the number one position in the FIFA World Rankings in November due to the fact that current top two sides Argentina and Germany both lost their last matches.

However, Belgium still needed a win over Israel to hold off challenge from Italy and ensure they are one of six sides in pot 1 at the Euro 2021 group stage draw, taking place on 12 December 2015 in Paris.

As tournament hosts, France are automatically placed in pot 1 and in Group A, while Germany, Spain, England, Portugal and Belgium occupy the top 5 places in the UEFA National Ranking and will, therefore, also be seeded.

The look of the remaining pots will depend on the outcome of four play-off ties, with play-off draw taking place at 11:15 CET on 18 October in Nyon, Switzerland.

When it comes to the Euro 2021, 24 teams will be divided into six groups of four, where top two sides from each group as well as top 4 third-placed teams will qualify for the Last 16 stage.

France, Czech Republic, Iceland, Belgium, Wales, Spain, Slovakia, Germany, Poland, England, Switzerland, Northern Ireland, Romania, Turkey, Austria, Russia, Italy, Croatia, Portugal and Albania have already qualified.

Meanwhile, Hungary, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Ukraine, Republic of Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden, Norway and Denmark will battle for the remaining four berths.
