Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli has emerged as the favourite to be appointed the new coach of Mexico, according to the latest reports.
The highly rated tactician achieved the biggest success of his career by leading La Roja to their first ever Copa America trophy on home soil, and it appears he is now looking for a new challenge.
After Marcelo Bielsa rejected the opportunity to succeed Miguel Herrera, Sampaoli has been contacted by the Mexican Football Federation.
The 55-year-old has already held initial talks with El Tri chiefs and it looks as though he is ready to accept their offer.
Mexico will have to pay around €2 million in compensation to Chile if they tie down Sampaoli, but that does not appear to be the problem at the moment.
El Tri chiefs sacked coach Miguel Herrera despite the fact he had won the 2015 Gold Cup and they are eager to appoint a high-profile coach as his successor.
Sampaoli’s growing reputation makes him a perfect candidate, especially considering that he has taken La Roja as far as he could.
