Southampton vs Newcastle United prediction
St Mary’s Stadium will host a clash between Southampton and Newcastle United this Saturday. The Geordies are looking for salvation points in Hampshire, while Ronald Koeman wants his team to get back to winning ways.
The Saints want their fourth straight win against the Geordies on home soil
After the loss against the Foxes, we can say with a lot of certainty that the Saints are now out of the contest for a Champions League spot next season. Southampton failed to help their former manager Mauricio Pochettino in his battle for the league trophy, since Leicester denied all their attempts to net at least one goal (1-0). Saido Mane came close, but Simpson was there to block the shot. The team from Hampshire thus ended their undefeated streak, but will rely on tradition in the forthcoming clash against the Magpies, since they have won their last three encounters with Newcastle at St Mary’s Stadium, keeping a clean sheet in all of them. After netting three in two consecutive matches, Pelle was completely neutralized this time out, but I do not reckon that will be the case with Newcastle’s drafty defense. Given the fact that Ronald Koeman’s charges have been rather successful on home soil, if we disregard the slip up against Chelsea, the Saints could achieve their fifth home triumph in 2016.
Florin Gardos is expected back in training in a few days, as well as Shane Long, but I do not believe they will recuperate in time for the clash against the Geordies.
The Magpies are quite miserable on their travels
Newcastle United came pretty close to securing a point against Norwich City in the previous round, thanks to the brace of Aleksandar Mitrovic, but Martin Olsson sent them home empty-handed with his goal in the dying moments of the match (3-2). Rafa Benitez was disappointed with the end result, stating that his team deserved a share of spoils, but in the end the Geordies recorded their eighth straight defeat on their travels. St James’ Park outfit are now six points away from the safe zone and desperately need a turn in fortune to keep their Premier League status. However, their below-par performances on the road give little hope to the fans that Rafa Benitez’s charges are capable of arresting the negative trend against the Saints. The offensive line often fails to produce when away from home, while the defenders managed to save their net only two times since the beginning of the season.
Jack Colback is suspended for the forthcoming match. Robert Elliot, Massadio Haidara, Tim Krul, Fabricio Coloccini, Paul Dummet and Sylvain Marveaux are in the recovery room, while Gabriel Obertain is back in training.
- The Saints lost just once on home soil in their last seven league games
- Ronald Koeman’s men are on a five-game undefeated run against the Geordies
- Newcastle took a single point in the league in their last six fixtures
- The Magpies are on an eight-game losing run on their travels
- More than 2.5 goals per game were seen in their previous four encounters
Southampton vs Newcastle United betting tip
Ronald Koeman’s charges netted ten goals in their last three home encounters against Newcastle, while the Magpies are still looking for their first goal at St Mary’s Stadium since September 2005. Judging by the statistics, a sure triumph of the hosts is expected, which is why I will put my money on the Saints.
Tip: Southampton to win
