PSG vs Lyon prediction

High-flying Paris Saint-Germain will be aiming to build on a 2-1 win over Olympique Marseille when they take on Olympique Lyon in yet another derby. The two sides take on each other in Coupe de France and it remains to be seen who will make it to the quarter-finals of the competition.

16 straight wins

PSG are the dominant force in French football and, as things stand now, they are going to defend the Ligue 1 title without any difficulties. Les Parisiens are leading the chase for the domestic trophy and they are no less than 24 points clear of second-placed Monaco. The capital club are on a 16-match winning run in all competitions and it is no surprise they are favourites on paper to emerge triumphant in Wednesday’s French Cup showdown against Lyon. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not getting any older and the Swedish attacker, who has been scoring goals for fun of late, is likely to pose a big threat for the opposition defender. Over the years les Parisiens have turned their Parc des Princes into a real fortress, but they will have to be at the top of their game if they are to eliminate les Gones in the French Cup last 16.

Marco Verratti and Gregory van der Wiel are both out of contention with injury, but coach Laurent Blanc has no fresh selection worries ahead of the visit of Lyon.

Back-to-back wins

Olympique Lyon have been producing fine performances in Ligue 1 ever since they moved to the new stadium. Following a 3-0 victory over Bordeaux, les Gones outclassed Angers at the weekend, but they will have a mountain to climb in Wednesday’s game against PSG if they are to make it to the French Cup quarter-finals. Bruno Genesio’s men recorded their last win at Parc des Princes back in 2012 and they certainly want history to repeat itself. Alexandre Lacazette did not leave the club in the January transfer window and all eyes will be on him when the two sides take on each other in the “City of Lights” on Wednesday evening. Anyhow, the visitors face an uphill task in the French Cup last 16 and I do not believe that away win should be considered this time out. It has to be noted that les Gones have suffered five defeats in previous eight away games in all competitions.

Rafael, Fofana and Fekir are all likely to miss the match with injury, but coach Bruno Genesio has no other selection worries ahead of the trip to Paris.

Quick Facts

  • PSG are eyeing their 17th consecutive win
  • Les Parisiens conceded 1+ goals in four of their last five home games
  • Laurent Blanc’s team are after their 10th Coupe de France trophy
  • Lyon managed to keep a clean sheet in previous two league games
  • Les Gones have netted nine goals in the 2015/2016 French Cup campaign
  • Bruno Genesio’s team were beaten by PSG in last three encounters

PSG vs Lyon betting tip

PSG are superior to Lyon at the moment, but les Parisiens will have to prove their worth on the field if they are to make it to the French Cup quarter-finals. Laurent Blanc is likely to field a very strong starting XI and considering that the capital club always produce their best performances in big matches, I believe that there is a big value in betting on the in-form hosts. PSG do not suit Lyon and the visitors are likely to return home empty-handed.
