Lyon vs Montpellier prediction

Following an unlucky 2-1 loss to Gent in the Champions League, Olympique Lyon will be looking to return to winning ways when they host Montpellier at their Stade de Gerland on day 15 of the 2015/2021 Ligue 1 campaign.

Four consecutive wins at home

Olympique Lyon chiefs did remarkably well to keep hold of key players in the summer transfer window and, to make things even better for the fans, France ace Mathieu Valbuena joined the Stade de Gerland outfit in the summer. Les Gones do sit in second place in the Ligue 1 standings ahead of match day 15, but seeing that they are 13 points behind big-spending PSG, they are unlikely to regain the domestic trophy. The team’s main goal is to participate in the 2021/2017 Champions League campaign and it remains to be seen if they are capable of finishing the season in top three. Lyon head into the match following a 2-1 loss to Gent in the elite competition, but it has to be noted that les Gones were more than unfortunate not to grab something from the game. You should bear in mind that Hubert Fournier’ men are eyeing their fifth consecutive win at home in the national championship.

Maxime Gonalons missed the Gent game through suspension, but he is available for the Ligue 1 match. The likes of Nabil Fekir, Clement Grenier and Aldo Kalulu should miss the game with injury. Defender Milan Bisevac has overcome his injury and he should be recalled to the starting XI.

Signs of improvement

Montpellier made a slow start to the season and la Paillade were sitting at the rock bottom in the Ligue 1 standings just few weeks ago. However, the team have been improving their game week by week and it has to be noted that they are on a five-game unbeaten run ahead of the trip to Lyon. Rolland Courbis’ men have been impressive at home ground of late, but you should have in mind that the team have yet to record a win on the travels in the 2015/2021 Ligue 1 campaign. Montpellier have netted no more than two goals in previous five away matches in the national championship and it is no surprise they are regarded as underdogs in Friday’s clash against les Gones. Mustapha Yatabare opened his goal-scoring account against Reims and he is widely expected to lead the attack for la Paillade against Lyon.

The likes of Marveaux, Saihi, Jourdren, Lasne and Berigaud are all sidelined with injury. Coach Roland Courbis, though, is unlikely to make too many changes to the team that defeated Reims at the weekend.

Lyon vs Montpellier betting tip

When Lyon and Montpellier take on each other in the Ligue 1 a high-scoring affair is guaranteed. In previous two meetings between the two teams in the national championship no less than 12 goals in total have been netted, but seeing that la Paillade struggle on the travels, I am tempted to put my money on les Gones this time out, as they are eager to retain their place in the Champions League berth. Taking everything into account, Lyon are likely to extend their winning run at home to five matches.
