Caen vs Marseille prediction

Having dropped two points against Guingamp at the weekend, Olympique Marseille will be aiming to stay in the race for a place in the Champions League with a win over Caen, who sit in 5th place in the Ligue 1 standings ahead of Matchday 21.

Logical dip in form

Caen were producing fine performances in the first half of the 2015/2021 Ligue 1 campaign, but given the quality of Patrice Garande’s team, Stade Michel d’Ornano were widely expected to suffer a dip in form. The team have yet to record a win in 2021 and they will be looking to stop the run of five games without a victory when they square off against Olympique Marseille on Sunday. Caen occupy fifth position in the standings ahead of the visit of OM, but they suffered a 2-0 loss to Angers in their last league game. Patrice Garande’s men were eliminated by Marseille in the Coupe de France earlier in January and they are certainly hungry for revenge. Caen might be short of goals, but they have already claimed several major scalps in the 2015/2021 Ligue 1 campaign and they should not be underestimated. Andy Delort has been in a fine form this season is likely to lead the attack for the hosts.

Jordan Adeoti misses the match through suspension, while Damien Da Silva is sidelined with injury. Emmanuel Imorou and Herve Bazile are both doubtful and the duo will be monitored ahead of the kick off.

Four consecutive draws

Olympique Marseille are on a quest to bring glory days back to Stade Velodrome, but the French giants have been struggling in the 2015/2021 Ligue 1 campaign. OM have collected no more than 26 points from possible 60 this term, but they have enough time to save the season. Michel’s men sit in the bottom half of the table and they shared the spoils with their rivals in each of previous four league matches. I believe that time has come for Marseille to start producing much better performances in the national championship and seeing that they are seven points behind third-placed Nice, OM are definitely capable of booking their place in the Champions League qualifiers. Coach Michel, though, has a number of selection worries ahead of the trip to Caen and it remains to be seen if the visitors are capable of recording their fifth away win of the season.

Benjamin Mendy, Paolo de Ceglie, Lucas Ocampos, Romain Alessandrini and Abou Diaby all miss the game with injury, while the likes of Lass Diarra, Abdel Barrada and Brice Dja Djedje all face late fitness tests.

Quick Facts

  • Caen are on a five-game winless run in the league
  • Patrice Garande’s men recorded only one win in previous five home matches in Ligue 1
  • Olympique Marseille registered four wins in last five away matches
  • OM conceded only one goal in previous four away games
  • Marseille failed to score in past two meetings with Caen

Caen vs Marseille betting tip

Olympique Marseille will need to be at their sharpest to return to winning ways in Ligue 1 and seeing that Caen have been totally out of form of late, I believe that there is a certain value in betting on the visitors this time out. Om were beaten by Patrice Garande’s troops in the reverse fixture and, no doubt, Michel’s men will leave their hearts on the field in order to get their revenge on the top-table side. In their last meeting at Stade Michel d’Ornano Marseille emerged triumphant.

Tip: Marseille to win
