Valencia vs Atletico Madrid prediction

If Diego Simeone plans to keep track with Barcelona in the title race, Atletico need to triumph at Mestalla this Sunday. Gary Neville finally started recording victories with Valencia, his team are a tough nut to crack on home turf, and an interesting battle is expected.

Valencia are finally back in the top ten

Valencia managed to get back to winning ways, as they defeated Malaga, with the little help of Carlos Kameni. Los Che went one behind, but Kameni’s own goal gave Gary Neville’s charges the necessary boost and thanks to Denis Cheryshev’s goal in the opening minutes of the second half, Valencia earned their fifth victory in their last six matches in all competitions. Mestalla outfit are finally back in the upper half of the table mostly thanks to their decent form of late. The fans hoped for a much higher position in the beginning of the season, but it seems that Neville is starting to put the pieces together and to produce positive results. Los Che have always been a tough team to beat when playing on home soil and this match will certainly be no exception. Truth being told, most of their home games ended with a share of spoils this term, but I do believe Valencia would be more than happy with a point against such an opponent.

Jose Gaya is serving his suspension, so we will not see him in the lineup. Zakaria Bakkali is recovering from his ankle injury, and is still in the recovery room alongside Aymen Adbennour (hamstring).

Atletico have the best defense in La Liga

After snatching all three points in the clash against Real Madrid, Atletico recorded a successive triumph, this time against Real Sociedad. Antoine Griezmann was once again one of the best on the pitch and once again produced a goal. Now los Colchoneros travel to Valencia hoping for a third straight league victory in order to cement the 2nd place in the table. Simeone is well aware los Che will present a tough obstacle this time out, but hopes his team will continue the winning run. Vicente Calderon outfit lost just two of their last seventeen away fixtures in all competitions, mostly thanks to their rock-solid defense. Diego Godin and Gimenes form an impenetrable rampart in front of Jan Oblak, and with the help of Juanfran and Filipe Luis, Atletico achieved six clean sheets in their last seven matches on the road. Barcelona are the only team who managed to net more than one goal against Simeone’s charges in La Liga, and the fact of the matter is Paco Alcacer and Feghouli will have serious problems against such a defense.

Apart from Tiago, who is probably out for the rest of the season, Diego Simeone will be without the likes of Stefan Savic (calf muscle strain) and Augusto Fernandez, who is sidelined due to his suspension.

Quick Facts

  • Valencia won five of their last six fixtures in all competitions
  • Los Che suffered only two league defeats on home soil since December 2014
  • Most of their matches at Mestalla this term ended in a draw
  • Atletico are on a six-game undefeated run
  • The Colchoneros recorded five consecutive clean sheets

Valencia vs Atletico Madrid betting tip

A tough battle is expected at Mestalla, since both teams are in good form nad none of them plan to lay their arms so easily. I trully expect a nail-bitter for the fans and will put my money on los Che and los Colchoneros sharing the spoils, since a draw seems as the most appropriate outcome.
