Malaga vs Atletico Madrid prediction

The hosts will be hoping for the Christmas miracle on Sunday as they prepare to welcome the high-flying Atletico Madrid, who look to keep their position at the top of the La Liga table. With Barcelona competing at the FIFA Club World Cup, Madrid-based club have the opportunity to go on holidays from the leading position.

Malaga hoping for a miracle

Los Boquerones will need to put the Copa del Rey embarrassment quickly behind them, as the home defeat to lowly Mirandes (1-0) has been a huge blow to Luis Garcia’s men. Malaga have recorded only two victories in their last ten matches across competitions and the odds are stacked against them in the Sunday clash against Atletico Madrid. Despite the patchy form and midweek Copa del Rey upset, Malaga are coming off from a 2-1 La Liga triumph at Rayo Vallecano last weekend. The come-from-behind victory will have been a morale boost, which has ultimately been undone by the loss to Mirandes and the hosts will need to improve their game significantly and do their utmost to make amends in front of their own fans on Sunday. The experienced Brazilian forward Charles has issued a rallying cry to his teammates and the 31-year-old striker is confident that Malaga can make something out of the game against the league joint-leaders. Charles is the team’s leading scorer with 5 goals from 14 league games, while he also added one Copa del Rey goal in the process.

Javi Garcia will have to do without Flavio Ferreira, who is set to miss the game due to injury. In addition, Marcos Angeleri is a huge fitness doubt.

Unstoppable Atletico

High-flying Atletico Madrid are enjoying a fantastic season. Nine-match winning run in all competitions is an impressive stretch, while it has to be noted that Diego Simeone’s charges have lost only two of their last 20 games, which is another proof of their scintillating form. The visitors are coming off from a 1-0 Copa del Rey triumph against Reus Deportu and the midweek game was an excellent opportunity for Diego Simeone to shuffle his deck and field the much-changed line-up in order to rest his first-team members. Teye Partey was the man of the hour, as the 22-year-old Ghana midfielder scored a winner against Reus Deportu, thus continuing the winning run for his team. As for the league, los Rojiblancos have managed a 2-1 home win against Athletic Bilbao last time out and will be fully confident as they travel to Malaga intending to claim maximum three points that would see them leapfrog Barcelona and clinch the leading position in the table. Antoine Griezmann has been absolutely fantastic so far with his eight league goals after 15 appearances. The 24-year-old French forward has also added four in the Champions League and definitely is the most important player in Diego Simeone’s team.

The Colombian striker Jackson Martinez has not featured since early November due to his foot injury and remains a major doubt for the last game of the calendar year, while Tiago remain the long-term injury and the only confirmed absentee for the trip to Malaga.

Quick Facts

  • Malaga have scored only 9 goals in 15 La Liga games this season
  • Atletico Madrid have allowed only 7 goals in as many outings
  • Los Boquerones have won just 2 of their last 12 home La Liga matches
  • Diego Simeone’s men are unbeaten in last 5 visits to La Rosaleda
  • Atletico Madrid have kept 5 clean sheets in last 9 league matches

Malaga vs Atletico Madrid betting tip

Atletico head into the clash with Malaga on the back of five consecutive league wins and I see good value in betting on the away team to claim another three points in their title chase. Malaga are the least efficient team in the league and Atletico could be supported for a clear win here.

Tip: Atletico to win to nil
