Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid prediction
Following a 2-1 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals, first leg, Atletico Madrid will be looking to return to winning ways when they face Espanyol at RCDE Stadium in Barcelona on Saturday evening. Los Periquitos are on a four-game unbeaten run in the league and they are brimming with confidence ahead of the visit of los Rojiblancos.
Fine form
Espanyol have been playing below expectations in the 2015/2016 La Liga campaign, but they are on the right to secure yet another elite division survival, which is the team’s main goal this season. Los Periquitos are eight points clear of the relegation zone and they will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to five matches when they take on Atletico Madrid at their RCDE Stadium on Saturday evening. Constantin Galca’s troops outplayed the likes of Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Bilbao in previous two home games in La Liga, but the Catalan outfit struggle against top-table sides and that is the main reason why they are regarded as underdogs in Saturday’s game against Atletico Madrid. Felipe Caicedo returns to the starting line-up and he will be deployed up front as a lone forward.
Arbilla has yet to overcome his injury, but he is the only injured player in the home team. Coach Constantin Galca is unlikely to make too many changes to the team that played out a 1-1 draw with Malaga at the weekend. Hernan Perez is banned.
Los Rojiblancos aim to recover from the CL loss
Depite taking the lead in the first half of the Champions League clash against Barcelona, ten-man Atletico Madrid eventually suffered a 2-1 defeat to Luis Enrique’s troops at Camp Nou. Los Rojiblancos aim to recover from the defeat and they will certainly take Saturday’s game against Espanyol very seriously. Despite the fact that Diego Simeone couldn’t count on his key defenders for the Real Betis clash at the weekend, the capital club did well to crush los Beticos 5-1 in front of home fans and thanks to the triumph the team regained their title hopes. Diego Simeone’s troops are six points behind Barcelona in the La Liga standings, meaning that only a win counts for los Rojiblancos this time out. Antoine Griezmann scored a brace against Real Betis and he will be the man to watch in the away team.
Stefan Savic missed the Barcelona game with injury, but he should recover in time to face Espanyol. Jose Gimenez remains a doubt, while Diego Godin has overcome his injury and he should start the match. Tiago Mendes remains in the recovery room.
Quick Facts
- Espanyol scored exactly two goals in previous two games at home in La Liga
- Los Periquitos failed to score in previous four meetings with Atletico Madrid
- Atletico Madrid failed to keep a clean sheet in last three away games in all competitions
- Over 2.5 goals were scored in Atletico Madrid’s last five league games
- Under 2.5 goals were netted in previous seven meetings between the two teams
Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid betting tip
Atletico Madrid aim to melt Barcelona’s advantage in La Liga standings to just three points and I am positive that los Rojiblancos will go for a win in Saturday’s game against Espanyol. Key defender Diego Godin returns to the starting line-up and seeing that Antoine Griezmann can’t stop scoring, away win should be considered.
Tip: Atletico Madrid to win
