Eibar vs Sporting Gijon prediction

Eibar come into Wednesday’s festive fixture after failing to record a win in previous five league games. Sporting Gijon were beaten by Sevilla at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Matchday 16 and, no doubt, both sides are determined to grab something from the final game of the season.

Armeros struggling to find their form

Estadio Municipal de Ipurua is a stadium which could be a graveyard for the very best La Liga sides. Eibar have suffered no more than two defeats at home ground this season and it has to be noted that they shared the spoils with Valencia in their last home fixture. Nonetheless, the team’s recent form is anything but good and los Armeros will leave their hearts on the field in Wednesday’s clash against Sporting Gijon in order to try and put an end to their five-game winless run in the national championship. Eibar have been slipping down the standings week by week and they need to overcome the crisis as soon as possible if they are to escape the danger zone. Jose Luis Mendilibar’s men suffered a 2-0 loss to Deportivo La Coruna at the weekend, but it has to be noted that referee Javier Estrada made mistake awarding the Galician side a penalty on the stroke of half time.

Ivan Ramis returns from suspension and he is likely to be recalled to the starting XI. Coach Jose Luis Mendilibar has no fresh injury worries ahead of the visit of Sporting Gijon.

Four consecutive defeats on the road

Many people expected that Sporting Gijon would struggle in Spanish top flight this season and they have yet to prove the doubters wrong. The newcomers, though, occupy 16th place in the standings ahead of the trip to the Basque Country and they will be more than happy should they happen to secure the elite division survival. Los Rojiblancos did well to beat fellow newcomers Las Palmas in their last home fixture, but coach Abelardo saw his men slip to a 2-0 loss to Sevilla at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The team extended their losing run on the road to four matches and, to make things even worse for the fans, Sporting Gijon suffered elimination in Copa del Rey as they were beaten by Real Betis in the two-legged tie. As a result, los Rojiblancos are fully focused on the national championship and a win over Eibar will certainly help the team keep their hopes of securing the La Liga survival alive.

Key attacker Antonio Sanabria has recovered in time to face Eibar, but the likes of Espinosa and Hernandez both miss the game through suspension. Important midfielder Alen Halilovic is likely to keep his place in the starting XI.

Quick Facts

  • Eibar have suffered only one loss in previous six home games in the league
  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in seven of Eibar’s previous eight home fixtures
  • Eibar have suffered three defeats in last four league games
  • Sporting Gijon are on a four-match losing run on the road
  • Los Rojiblancos have netted only one goal in previous five away fixtures

Eibar vs Sporting Gijon betting tip

On paper this match looks like a home win, but seeing that Eibar have been struggling in front of goal of late, I do not believe that there is a big value in betting on los Armeros. Sporting Gijon are desperate toe pick up at least one point from the Estadio Municipal de Ipurua, but given their poor away record, we are unlikely to see goals galore in Eibar.

Tip: Under 2.5 goals
