Athletic Bilbao vs Rayo Vallecano prediction

Out-of-form Athletic Bilbao will be aiming to stop the run of four matches without a win in all competitions when they take on Rayo Vallecano at their San Mames Barria on Sunday evening.

Dip in form

Athletic Bilbao do not seem to be at the top of their game ahead of the visit of Rayo Vallecano. The Basque outfit are on a four-game winless run in all competitions and it seems as if playing on two fronts has turned to be the team’s biggest problem in the season finale. Ernesto Valverde’s charges failed to beat Granada in their last league game (1-1) and, to make things even worse for the fans, the Lions suffered a 2-1 loss to Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-final, first leg at their San Mames Barria. Athletic Bilbao are eager to retain their spot in top six in the La Liga standings and they will certainly give their all to put an end to the negative trend. Aritz Aduriz found the net in the 2-1 loss to Sevilla on Thursday evening and the team’s top scorer is likely to be deployed up front as a lone forward.

Sabin suffered a serious injury against Granada and he is definitely out of contention, but Iker Muniain is fit and he is likely to start the match. Aymeric Laporte remains in the recovery room.

Morale-boosting win over Getafe

Rayo Vallecano gave fans some cheer at the weekend, with the team beating Getafe in the local derby 2-0. Los Vallecanos managed to put an end to their seven-game winless run in La Liga and thanks to the triumph over loz Azulones they escaped the relegation zone. Paco Jemez’s men are three points clear of bottom three, but they need to keep on improving their game if they are to secure yet another elite division survival. Rayo are tough to beat at home, but the team’s away record is poor and it has to be noted that the capital club are on a 14-match winless run on the road. Los Vallecanos recorded their last away win on 20 September, 2015 (Las Palmas) and it remains to be seen if they are capable of spoiling Athletic Bilbao’s party at San Mames Barria.

Yoel and Tito both miss the match through suspension, while Ze Castro and Adri Embarba have both served their respective bans. The likes of Cobeno, Ebert, Jozabed and Tono remain on the sidelines with injury.

Quick Facts

  • Over 2.5 goals were netted in each of Rayo’s last nine away matches in La Liga
  • Los Vallecanos conceded 2+ goals in previous nine away fixtures in the league
  • Over 2.5 goals were scored in seven of last eight meetings between the two teams
  • Athletic Bilbao failed to keep a clean sheet in previous four home games in La Liga
  • 10 goals were scored in last four (La Liga) meetings between the two sides

Athletic Bilbao vs Rayo Vallecano betting tip

Athletic Bilbao are eager to return to winning ways in La Liga and given Rayo Vallecano’s poor away record, I would not be surprised if the Basques pick up all three points from Sunday’s clash. Los Vallecanos conceded 2+ goals in each of their previous nine away games and, taking everything into account, the Lions should score over 1.5 goals in the San Mames Barria clash.

Tip: Athletic Bilbao to score 2+ goals

Odds: 1.53 (8/15) @Betfair
