Athletic Bilbao vs Granada prediction

Athletic Bilbao will be aiming to make amends for a 2-1 loss to Espanyol when they host Granada at their San Mames Barria on Sunday. The Lions want to regain their spot in top six, but the relegation-threatened Granadinos should not be underestimated.

San Mames – the fortress

Athletic Bilbao’s four-game winning run in La Liga came to an end. The Lions suffered a 2-1 loss to Espanyol in Barcelona in their last league match, with los Boquerones coming from behind to beat the Basque outfit. Ernesto Valverde’s troops, though, often struggle on the travels, but they are tough to beat at home. Athletic are determined to extend their winning run at San Mames to three games and a victory over Granada on Sunday would see them regain their spot in top six. Aritz Aduriz is enjoying a very successful season and the Spanish veteran, who scored for Spain in the 1-1 draw with Italy at the weekend is widely expected to lead the attack for the hosts. The Lions are eyeing their ninth home win of the season, but they can’t afford any complacency in the game against Granada.

Inaki Williams has overcome his injury and he could play some part in Sunday’s clash against Granada, but Aymeric Laporte suffered a serious injury and he could be four weeks out of contention. Ibai Gomez is fit and he could return against los Granadinos.

Important game for Granada

After suffering a loss to Real Betis in the Andalusian derby on 6 March, Granada played out back-to-back draw with the likes of Espanyol and Rayo Vallecano in previous two league matches. The team’s top flight status is in great danger as they are sitting in 17th place in the La Liga standings ahead of Matchday 31, meaning that the visitors are desperate to grab something from the San Mames clash. Granada enjoy playing against Athletic Bilbao and it remains to be seen if Jose Gonzalez’s men are capable of upsetting the Lions in the Basque Country for the second consecutive season. Los Granadinos managed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last three league fixtures, but preventing in-form attacker Aritz Aduriz from scoring this time out is easier said than done. A man to watch in the away team will be Morocco attacker El-Arabi, who has netted 10 goals this term.

Important attacker Isaac Success is banned, while the likes of Miguel Lopes, El Arabi and Doucoure are all fit to play against Athletic Bilbao. Penaranda is likely to replace Success in the starting XI.

Quick Facts

  • Granada are after their fourth consecutive clean sheet against Athletic Bilbao
  • Athletic Bilbao are after their third straight win at home
  • Lions scored eight goals in last three home fixtures in all competitions
  • Jhon Cordoba scored the winner for Granada in their last meeting with Athletic at San Mames
  • Granada suffered six defeats in previous seven away games in La Liga

Athletic Bilbao vs Granada betting tip

Despite the fact that Athletic Bilbao suit Granada, I am not tempted to put my money on the relegation strugglers this time out. Important attacker Success misses the match through suspension and given that the Andalusian outfit have been struggling on the travels in 2016, I believe that there is a big value in betting on the Lions, who have turned their San Mames into a real fortress.
