PAOK vs Borussia Dortmund 1-1 (2015/16 Europa League)

Borussia Dortmund vs PAOK prediction

Die Borussen are locking horns with PAOK on Thursday night still hoping to end the group stage of the UEFA Europa League top of the table. Greek outfit have lost all chances of progressing through to the knock out stage and will play for their pride in Germany.

Going for the third

Bouncing back from the 1-0 defeat against Krasnodar away in the last round of Europa League, Borussia Dortmund notched back-to-back Bundesliga wins and will be highly motivated to make a good result against their Greek opposition on Thursday. Die Borussen are currently occupying the second spot in Group C, level on points with the Russian side who have the better head-to-head result. Thomas Tuchel’s men have already secured their spot in the knock out stages, but the game against PAOK could possibly earn them the top spot. Germans are on the good run at the moment, having won nine of their last 11 games in all competitions. Tuchel’s troops survived their trip to Greece in October, but were made to chase the result as PAOK took an early lead at the half-hour mark. Dortmund levelled the score on 72 minutes through Castro, and will now look to get one back at their Greek rivals. The hosts will rely upon the fine form of their talismanic striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who has scored 7 goals in as many Europa Leagues games. In addition, the 26-year-old Gabon forward added 17 strikes in 15 league appearances, becoming one of the most prolific strikers in Europe.

Tuchel is likely to once again rest his first-choice defensive duo Mats Hummels and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who missed the weekend game due to injury, so midfielder Sven Bender could once again be deployed in the centre of defence together with Neven Subotic. Julian Weigl returned to training following a stomach problem. Ilkay Gundogan picked up a knock and could as well miss the Thursday fixture.

Nothing to fight for

PAOK are travelling to Germany with their sights set on the weekend match-up with Levadiakos, direct rivals for one of the European spots at the end of the Greek league season. Igor Tudor will most likely look to rest his team and prepare them for the weekend challenge, as his side has nothing to fight for. PAOK are third in Group C with four points to their name and this is where their European path ends. Black and Whites are coming off from back-to-back league wins, and will look to shuffle things in order to save their strength for the game against Levadiakos. PAOK are sitting third in the league standings, keeping hold of the European spots will be their priority. Former Juventus player Igor Tudor will most certainly come in the game with tight defending on his mind. His team scored only twice in the group stage so far and with former Bundesliga players Dmitar Berbatov and Ricardo Costa out with injuries, scoring goals will once again be the problem for the Greek side.

In addition to Berbatov and Costa, PAOK will make their trip to Germany without Charilaos Charisis, who is having hamstring problems and Stelios Kitsiou, who is having back struggles.

The hosts are keen on getting the good result out of the game with PAOK and are expected to go hard on the visiting team. I see a good value in betting on Dortmund and a home win is a clear choice.
