Head to head record
Athletic Bilbao vs Augsburg 3-1 (2015/16 Europa League)
Augsburg vs Athletic Bilbao prediction
German side Augsburg are set to welcome Athletic Bilbao on Thursday night in the Europa League game which is likely to answer a couple of questions in Group L of the competition.
All cards on Europe
Augsburg are having a difficult season in the Bundesliga. The Fuggerstadter are occupying the 17th place in the standings, just a point above the bottom-placed Hoffenheim and their domestic season looks set for a tough relegation struggle. Augsburg are coming off from their second win of the season, which will have been a major morale-boost for Marcus Weinzierl’s troops, who have recorded an impressive 4-1 win over fellow strugglers Stuttgart over the weekend. The Germans will now be looking to exploit the momentum and continue with the fine performances in Europa League. Sitting second in the table with three points behind their Thursday rivals, Augsburg are looking to record a positive result that will keep them in frame for the knock-out stage. Everything is still open in Group L, Augsburg are level on points with Partizan Belgrade and will need to stay unbeaten, at least. It will be easier said than done, but the hosts will be relying on their key man this season Raul Bobadilla to make a difference. The Argentine striker has been in fine form, scoring four of his team’s seven goals so far in four matches.
Augsburg will have to do without Marco Schuster and Sacha Molders, who are injured for the forthcoming fixture. Tobias Werner and Jeong-Ho Hong are long-term absentees, while Markus Fulner is havinga fever and will most likely sit out as well.
Athletic Bilbao were having a poor start to the season, but the things have improved significantly. Los Leones have been defeated 2-0 in the last La Liga round against Granada, but it has to be noted that this was their first league loss in the last seven games. What is more, Valverde’s charges were on a five-match winning run prior to their trip to Granada. Athletic Bilbao have been dominant in their Europa League group as well, humiliating Partizan with a 5-1 defeat in the last round to clinch the top spot. Their Augsburg visit offers a chance to book the place in the knock-out stage and there is no doubt that Spanish side will give their best to claim another important win in the competition. Los Leones have conceded only four goals in as many games, scoring 11 in the process. Four of those were scored by in-form Aritz Aduriz who has been top of his game throughout the season. The experienced 34-year-old Spanish forward has added seven goals in 12 league matches and four more in the Super Cup, taking his tally to 15 goals so far in the season.
Ernesto Valverde will be without Mikel Rico, Kike Sola and Ibai Gomez who are ruled out with their respective injuries.
Augsburg vs Athletic Bilbao betting tip
Augsburg have been going from strength to strength in this competition, but I believe that Athletic Bilbao will this time be too big if a hurdle. Los Leones are much experienced side with plenty of talent and individual quality to see off the motivated hosts.
