Athletic Bilbao vs Sevilla prediction

Having survived Valencia in the Europa League last 16, Athletic Bilbao will be looking to eliminate yet another La Liga side in the process when they take on Sevilla in the quarter-finals of the European competition.

Lions tough to beat at home

Athletic Bilbao have been having their ups and downs in La Liga this season, but they did well to reach the Europa League quarter-finals. The Lions set up a meeting with fellow La Liga side by beating the likes of Marseille and Valencia in previous two rounds, but it has to be noted that they were more than fortunate to eliminate los Che in the Europa League last 16. Aritz Aduriz scored a late away goal in the Estadio de Mestalla clash and, no doubt, the experienced attacker will be the man to watch in the home team in Thursday’s clash against Sevilla. Over the years Athletic Bilbao have turned their Estadio San Mames Barria into a real fortress and you should bear in mind that Ernesto Valverde’s troops are on a seven-game unbeaten run at home in the Europa League.

Talented attacker Sabin suffered an injury in a 1-1 draw with Granada at the weekend and he has joined the likes of Laporte and Merino in the recovery room. Former Atletico Madrid midfielder Raul Garcia misses the Sevilla game through suspension.

Poor away record

Believe or not, Sevilla have yet to record a win on the road in the 2015/2016 La Liga campaign and, to make things even worse for the fans, Real Sociedad put an end to Sevilla’s 13-game winning run at home ground at the weekend. Unai Emery’s men are unlikely to book their place in the Champions League, but the Andalusian outfit are certainly capable of winning their third consecutive Europa League trophy. Los Sevillanos set up a meeting with Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals of the European competition by beating the likes of Molde and Basel, but Thursday’s game against Ernesto Valverde’s team will be anything but a walk in the park for the hosts. Fernando Llorente will face his old club at San Mames Barria but the “Lion King” is unlikely to start the match. Top scorer Kevin Gameiro is likely to be deployed up front as a lone forward and the opposition defenders should have him at bay.

Coach Unai Emery has no fresh injury worries ahead of the trip to Bilbao. Danish winger Krohn-Dehli should return to the starting line-up after missing the Real Sociedad game through injury.

Quick Facts

  • Athletic Bilbao scored 1+ goals in each of their last seven home games in EL
  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in three of Athletic’s last four games in EL
  • Sevilla are on an eight-game winless run on the road
  • Los Sevillanos failed to score in three of their last five away games
  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in last three meetings between the two teams

Athletic Bilbao vs Sevilla betting tip

Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla seem to be evenly matched at the moment and there is every chance we will see a close encounter at San Mames Barria. In previous three meetings between the two sides under 2.5 goals were netted and I do not believe that we will see goals galore in the Basque Country. In their last meeting at San Mames Athletic Bilbao recorded a 1-0 win over Sevilla.

Tip: Under 2.5 goals

Odds: 1.80 (4/5) @bet365
