Juventus vs Torino prediction

The oldest football derby in Italian history is on the way this Wednesday, as the Old Lady play the Bulls at Juventus Stadium in the Coppa Italia last 16. Massimiliano Allegri wants his squad to finish 2015 with a flawless record in their next two games, while the Maroons intend to continue their winning streak in the cup this term. Even though the time of the Grande Torino is long in the past, Derby della Mole always represented a special treat for all local fans in Turin.

The return of the Champions

After a miserable start of the season, Juventus claimed their sixth successive league win against Fiorentina last weekend (3-1). Even though they were a goal behind, late goals by Mandžukić and Dybala brought a smile on Allegri’s face, pushing the Old Lady on to the fourth place in overall standings. The Bianconeri now trail only six points behind Internazionale and are effectively back in the Scudetto race. Last season’s domestic double winners started the current campaign in dreadful manner, winning only two of their opening seven fixtures in all competitions. At the time it seemed that the departure of star players such as Tevez, Pirlo and Vidal inflicted irreparable loss to the squad, but Allegri proved them all wrong. Coincidentally, the rise of the champions started with the game against Torino (2-1) earlier this season and the next game against il Toro will be a perfect opportunity to continue their flawless run.

Even though they lost the first place in their Champions League group with the defeat against Sevilla (1-0), the Bianconeri are gaining momentum in the domestic competition. In their previous six league fixtures they scored 14 of their total 25 goals in this term, while conceding only 3 times. Additionally, Allegri’s men recorded a single defeat on home ground in Serie A, with five victories and two draws, mostly thanks to their rock-solid defense. Bearing in mind that they won five games in a row at Juventus Stadium in all competitions, Torino will have a difficult task to end the flawless streak of their rivals.

Allegri announced that Neto and Rugani would be given a chance in the upcoming Coppa Italia fixture. As for the injured players, it seems that Asamoah has recovered from his injury and will be at disposal. Roberto Pereyra and Mario Lemina still remain sidelined, while Hernanes awaits the final verdict of the medical staff.

Time for revenge?

Giampiero Ventura’s men proved that they can cope with their famous rivals in recent matches. After a magnificent win on home soil against the Bianconeri last term (2-1), Torino players provided yet another nail-biter at Juventus Stadium earlier this season (2-1). It seemed that the Maroons had a point in the bag, but Cuadrado’s late goal burst their bubble, thus starting Juventus’ magnificent streak. The Bulls will be looking for revenge, and the perfect one would be to end Allegri’s winning run at the same place it started.

The Granata are on a good run in recent matches, with three consecutive victories and a draw against Roma. They currently occupy the 10th position in Serie A, but can climb a couple of places up the ladder if they record a win in the postponed fixture with Sassuolo. Their current goal difference in Serie A (21-19) tells us that they are a team that do not base their game on defense, but their forwards usually manage to compensate for the mistakes made by the leaky back line. When it comes to Coppa Italia, up to now they hammered Pescara and Cesena by identical scoreline (4-1) and are coming to Juventus Stadium in high spirits. But bare the following in mind: Giampiero Ventura’s men haven’t recorded an away win against Juventus for more than twenty years. Although the Maroons have been a worthy opponent in almost every encounter with the Old Lady, they recorded only two wins in previous twenty Turin derbies.

The most recent reports confirmed that Marco Benassi will miss the Derby della Mole for Torino, along with Gaston Silva, Joel Obi, Nikola Maksimovic and Alexander Farnerud, who are all out due to injuries.

Quick Facts

  • Juventus won their last five home matches against Torino
  • The Old Lady won fourteen of their previous twenty Turin derbies (D4 L2)
  • Bianconeri are on a five-game winning streak on home soil
  • Torino won their last away Derby della Mole in season 1994/1995 (2-1)
  • The Bulls scored mere 2 goals in previous seven away meetings with Juventus
  • The two teams averaged under 2 goals (1.83) in last six meetings at Juventus Stadium

Juventus vs Torino betting tip

The home side are on a great run in domestic competition and it seems nothing can stop them from continuing their winning streak. Derby della Mole has always been very important for both teams regardless of their current league positions, but we have to admit that the Old Lady have been dominant in previous two decades, if we disregard their occasional slip-ups. This is why I firmly believe that anything but the home win is out of the question.

Tip: Home win
